The Local Authority Research Practitioner will enhanceour joint research strategy and governance for the Local Authorityarea by strengthening the delivery and performance of researchprojects and championing the role of research across the Council,North Somerset NHS Localities, and the Bristol, North Somerset andSouth Gloucestershire (BNSSG) Integrated Care System. The role willalso support research investigators, collaborations, and thefunding and delivery of other studies, such as service evaluations.This is a key role needed to assist the development ofevidence-based approaches to policy and practice, and to create aculture of continuous learning and improvement for the benefit ofthe health and wellbeing of our population and to reduce healthinequalities in North Somerset. Organisational context This role isjointly funded by the National Institute for Health NIHR, NorthSomerset Council and the two North Somerset Locality Partnershipsof One Weston and Woodspring within the Bristol, North Somerset andSouth Gloucestershire .BNSSG Integrated Care. The post holder willbecome a member of North Somerset Councils Health and Care team,part of the Healthy and Sustainable Communities Directorate. Thepost holder will work with a wide range of internal and externalpartners, across the Council, the NHS Integrated Care Board ICB,NHS Locality Partnerships and Voluntary, Community, Faith andSocial Enterprise sectors VCFSE, as well as other relevantpartners, commissioned service providers and residents.Organisational chart Dimensions The post holder will expandexisting research capacity and infrastructure within the counciland support timely knowledge transfer. Some of the work will buildon achievements in other directorates and within NHS structures.This requires the ability to quickly understand and navigatecomplex systems, incentives and organisational cultures andlanguages. Direction and support will be offered via line managerrelationship and through the management and leadership team forHealth and Care Public Health. Further support will be offeredthrough academic partners, the National Institute for HealthResearch (NIHR) and the BNSSG ICB. However, the individual will beexpected to progress tasks using their initiative and adjustingplans based on agreed priorities. Main responsibilities Design andconduct public health or related research and evaluation projectsand provide guidance, advice and support to researchers andorganisations in the local area. Deliver training programmes toimprove research methods, knowledge transfer and health outcomesacross North Somerset. Provide guidance and support for thoselooking to undertake research in the Council or its LocalityPartners, sharing knowledge of current best practice, legislationand guidance. Apply quantitative and qualitative research methodsand disseminate findings Liaise with colleagues across the Counciland Localities, identifying barriers to research and working tocreate the infrastructure which will enable hosting of studies andlocally initiated research and evaluation projects. Work closelywith stakeholders to identify common research interests and tomaximise potential for setting up relevant studies and obtainingfunding for them. Set up systems to support research andevidence-based service delivery and provide expert advice onresearch and evaluation methods Develop, embed and promote bestpractice research governance processes. Identify, criticallyappraise and clearly present local, national and internationalresearch evidence to inform policy and practice. Maintain goodworking relations with others in the NIHR Local Authority ResearchPractitioner Network, Council and academic institutions. Incollaboration with the Council, NHS ICB, and Localities, furtherembed into practice the utilisation of the locally developed Theoryof Change. To ensurecompliance with all health and safety legislation and associatedcodes of practice and authority policies. Work control, supervisionand work planning The post holder will be required to coordinate anumber of programmes and projects progressing at the same time.This requires organising, prioritising and managing work to agreeddeadlines, at times across organisations. The role is relying oncooperation and collaboration and requires flexibility, consensusmaking and an inquisitive way of finding solutions and decisions.Contacts and communication skills Public Health services are broadand rely on the collaboration of many stakeholders to be effectiveand to achieve improved outcomes for our population. The postholder with therefore need to work with representatives from arange of different organisations, as well as residents of NorthSomerset. Working with council, NHS and Locality colleagues, thepost holder will promote a culture of research and evidence acrossNorth Somerset Health and Care services. The post holder will berequired to communicate with a range of stakeholders andsituations, making a judgement of how they adjust their style andapproach accordingly. The post holder will have a high standard ofcommunication skills, demonstrated by the ability to produce highquality documents which are accurate and easy to understand by allstakeholders. The post holder may present and disseminate researchfindings at conferences and write for peer reviewed journals. Thepost holder will liaise with internal and external partners,including: Healthy and Sustainable Communities Directorate AdultSocial Care Childrens Services Other teams within the Council. OneWeston, and Woodspring Locality partnerships, BNSSG Integrated CareSystem and constituent partners National Institute of Health andCare Research NIHR Local Authorities in BNSSG, within the SouthWest and nationally Voluntary, Community, Faith and SocialEnterprise organisations NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West -ARC West and the NIHR RSS Specialist Centre for Public HealthQualifications and experience- Please see the attached personspecification.
