York, United Kingdom The National Trust Full time
Senior Building Surveyor/Architect - York

Summary

We're seeking a Senior Building Surveyor/Architect with expertise in historic properties to join our team at the National Trust on a fixed-term contract. This role offers the chance to work on some of the region's most iconic structures, from coastal sites to wooded estates and lakeland hills.

A full driving license and access to your own vehicle are required, with business mileage reimbursable.

What it's like to work here

Your work will be part of our National Trust Consultancy, offering properties advice and support on conservation and supporter development. You’ll bring strong conservation building/architectural expertise, extensive experience, and the ability to work efficiently in complex technical situations.

As this role covers the North region, your contractual place of work will be our Goddards office in York. However, our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week.

What you'll be doing

You’ll work on key regional projects across various sites in the North, collaborating with other Building Surveyors and supported by the wider community regionally and nationally.

From mansion houses and castles to civil infrastructure, you’ll provide top-tier conservation building services, overseeing projects from inception to completion. Your focus will be on larger, higher-value projects, either conservation or compliance-related. You’ll offer expert advice and ensure the highest conservation standards, often acting as project manager within the NT’s governance framework, overseeing external advisors and contractors. You’ll also lead building conservation assessments and contribute to project planning.

Building strong relationships with stakeholders is essential. Your internal clients will mainly be National Trust General Managers and Facilities Managers, and you’ll also work with NT specialists and local authority officers, ensuring clear communication and collaborative problem-solving.

Who we're looking for

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
  • Experienced Chartered Construction professional with supervisory skills.
  • Proficient in construction project management tools, with a focus on risk mitigation.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing abilities, working in multi-disciplinary teams, including non-construction specialists.
  • Proven ability to build strong internal and external relationships, with experience collaborating with agencies, contractors, and organisations.
  • Experienced in managing and assessing the quality of external consultants' work as a Client Construction Lead.
  • Demonstrated financial responsibility for projects, with strong data management skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant legislative requirements related to the role.
