Based in Livingston, ESS Recruit’s client comprises of a group of European companies engaged in the design, development, manufacture and distribution of analytical systems, life science equipment and laboratory instruments with operations dating back to 1920. They design, develop, supply and support Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry product lines for a range of markets including forensics, food quality, environmental, pharma and life sciences. The company maintains a global infrastructure to support sales around the world and they currently need to recruit a Scientist / Project Manager with a focus on Mass Spectrometry.


You will initially be focused to MS development but may subsequently expand to other types of analytical instrumentation. You will work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team but will work with colleagues globally.


Responsibilities:

  • Design, conduct, and keep record of experiments
  • Analyse and present the scientific and business data, take part in scientific discussions
  • Support other parts of business, including production, quality, and product management
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team in order to develop, test, and support production within a project managed environment
  • Undertake improvements to existing products.
  • Build and test prototypes and pre-production products.
  • Support transfer to production of new products.


Ideally you will have a degree or higher in a natural sciences discipline, with a strong analytical focus, this would be suited to a Physics background. You should demonstrate a flair for innovation through a record of IP generation or scientific publications with an ability to understanding fundamental theoretical principles of scientific analytical instrumentation. Experience in the development of scientific instrumentation or a strong record of use of analytical instrumentation along with practical experience of handling, operating, and testing scientific instrumentation and the design of experiments, analysis, processing, and presentation of scientific data / Design for Manufacture and Regulatory Approval is ideal. Also desirable would be a strong MS background, especially in Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (although not essential) and experience of working with GC/MS. Previous experience of working under quality management systems and speaking with customers and understanding their requirements would also be advantageous. As would experience of preparing standard solutions by accurate weighing and pipetting and of working with vacuum and high voltage, perhaps in a clean room environment.
