Mechanical Engineering Industrial Placement

Fawley Fife, United Kingdom ExxonMobil Full time

About us

At ExxonMobil, our vision is to lead in energy innovations that advance modern living and a net-zero future. As one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy and chemical companies, we are powered by a unique and diverse workforce fueled by the pride in what we do and what we stand for.

The success of our Upstream, Product Solutions and Low Carbon Solutions businesses is the result of the talent, curiosity and drive of our people. They bring solutions every day to optimize our strategy in energy, chemicals, lubricants and lower-emissions technologies.

We invite you to bring your ideas to ExxonMobil to help create sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet society’s evolving needs. Learn more about our What and our Why and how we can work together.

ExxonMobil has operated in the U.K. for more than 135 years. We are best known today for the marketing of our Esso fuels and Mobil 1 lubricants and for our petrochemicals. We have refining and chemical operations in the UK, we operate the UK’s biggest private pipeline network and we retain a non-operated share in a number of fields in the North Sea. More recently, we are developing our involvement in lower emission projects in the UK, building on our experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen production and biofuels.

An ExxonMobil career is one designed to last. Our commitment to you runs deep: our employees grow personally and professionally, with benefits built on our core categories of health, security, finance, and life.

What role you will play in our team

We are now recruiting for our 2025 UK Industrial Placement Programme and we are seeking exceptional people who we can empower to think independently, take initiative and be innovative.

While on placement with ExxonMobil you will have support and guidance from managers, supervisors and recent graduates to enable you to apply your degree knowledge and fulfil your potential, gaining confidence and experience as an individual, and learning new skills in a real operational environment.

What you will do

Our job roles in Mechanical Engineering cover many exciting work areas – we’ll give you the opportunity to experience a variety of work projects and contribute to the success of our team. You could find yourself developing the mechanical integrity plan for critical equipment, exploring new inspection techniques, completing onsite inspections and developing repair plans, analysing equipment health data, developing a new corrosion tool or leading one of our many other work items.

Whichever team you start in, you’ll have real responsibility from day one and we’ll provide a supportive learning environment, where you can develop a solid foundation of professional skills. We have an IMechE accredited scheme and the Industrial Placement year can count towards chartership.

The first month of your placement will set you up for success with a comprehensive induction and handover programme. You’ll have the chance to experience large scale manufacturing operations first hand and grow your on-site skills and experience.

As your placement progresses you’ll have opportunity to seek out and take on technical projects that advance both the business and your personal development.

About you

To be eligible for this role, you should:

  • Be starting your penultimate year in autumn 2024.
  • Be expecting a minimum of a 2:1 degree in Mechanical Engineering, or similar degree course.
  • Be seeking to gain work experience on a 13 month paid Industrial Placement commencing on 30th June 2025.

Successful candidates should possess a broad range of personal effectiveness and leadership skills, with the ability to facilitate and influence business decisions in a team environment.

What are the next steps?

If you are Interested, you can apply now.

The closing date for this opportunity is Sunday 7th July 2024, at which point we will begin our two stage assessment process.

  • Behavioural Assessment.
  • Technical competency-based Interview (Zoom).

If your application is not successful at any stage we will let you know as soon as we can.

ExxonMobil recognises that recruiting and developing the right people is key to our success and so we look for applicants who demonstrate the right skills, attitudes, capability and potential. Our processes are designed to be robust, engaging and consistent.

Conditions of Employment
Successful candidates will be made a conditional offer of employment. The conditions include, but are not limited to: a satisfactory criminal records disclosure; satisfactory employment references over five years (where applicable); verification of qualifications, including any professional accreditation stated in the application; completion of a pre-employment medical, including a test for illicit or unprescribed drugs in accordance with the Company's safety policies; and the legal right to work on the agreed commencement date.

Equal Employment Opportunity Policy
ExxonMobil and its United Kingdom subsidiary companies, Esso Petroleum Company, Limited, and ExxonMobil Chemical Limited, are equal opportunity employers and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment. All applicants are offered equal opportunity to demonstrate their abilities during our recruitment processes, therefore, please contact the Recruitment Team if you wish to discuss any particular requirements to enable you to complete our recruitment process.
