The Role Responsibilities

  • To be responsible for legal advice, transactional support and issues relevant to the Consumer, Private and Business Banking in UK and Jersey with particular focus on regulatory matters including regulatory interpretation and supporting contentious matters, if any.
  • As an independent second line risk control function, execute the relevant aspects of the Legal framework through robust independent risk control and the provision of specialist advice and constructive challenge in a manner proportionate to the nature, scale and complexity of the Group's business.
  • Proactively support and challenge the CPBB businesses and functions to exhibit appropriate conduct, comply with legal and regulatory requirements and strive to achieve fair outcome for the Group's clients.
  • Maintain independence, deliver timely responses, and timely escalation of risks and issues where risk management tolerance of the firm are exceeded.

Business

  • Build and maintain an effective and constructive relationship with all key business and functional stakeholders that is based on trust, capability and integrity, providing timely, responsive and quality legal advice and guidance to enable the business and functions to meet/ achieve their strategic tactical objectives.
  • Provide robust challenge to senior management and all relevant business stakeholders where activities are outside risk tolerance/ appetite, escalating as necessary, until appropriate oversight and ownership is achieved including actions and plans to address any remedial action needed to come back within risk tolerance/ appetite.
  • Work closely with the business to provide timely legal advice to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations relevant to CPBB in the UK and Jersey.
  • Provide support in problem-solving and crisis management over critical issues that have a legal or regulatory impact on the CPBB's business/ operations.

Risk Management

  • Act as local Risk Owner in London under the Group's Risk Management Framework for CPBB processes where Legal is the second line Risk Owner.
  • Ensure proactive and timely identification, assessment, advice and dissemination of evolving regulatory changes/practices and associated risks, and proactive engagement in regulatory reform.
  • Assist Head of Legal in providing reports to relevant Group and Business risk and control committees and management group on key legal risks and issues.

Governance

  • Within the Group's overall Risk Management Framework, establish and maintain appropriate risk based frameworks for identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, mitigating and reporting legal risks across CPBB.
  • Develop and recommend (for approval by the relevant Risk owners), appropriate country addenda to policies and procedures relevant to CPBB.

Regulatory and Business Conduct

  • Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group's Values and Code of Conduct.
  • Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank. This includes understanding and ensuring compliance with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and the Group Code of Conduct.
  • Lead the UK/Jersey CPBB Legal team to achieve the outcomes set out in the Bank's Conduct Principles: [Fair Outcomes for Clients; Effective Financial Markets; Financial Crime Compliance; The Right Environment.] *
  • Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified lawyer with post-qualification experience (ideally with experience in advising on regulatory changes applicable to private clients) and having trained with a reputable law firm in the UK)
  • Previous experience of working within a regulated environment (ideally with retail clients) as an in-house lawyer
  • Thorough knowledge of financial services, banking and other laws and regulations in UK and Jersey
  • Strong analytical and innovative legal skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, especially with business people
  • Good judgement enabling the provision of sound advice in difficult areas of law and practice while being solution focused.
  • Personal authority, integrity and ethics
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work effectively with business units.
  • Proficiency in English, written and spoken.
  • Good use of the pack Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) and good typing skills
