The School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Grade 6) in Law. The post is for a period of 22 months to provide cover for research leave. 

The successful candidate will be or have the potential to be: excellent teachers and scholars; be close to completing or already hold a PhD or hold equivalent professional expertise in Law or a cognate field by the time the appointment begins; and have an ambitious scholarship agenda. From a teaching perspective, the successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to teach EU Law. The post holder may also be supported to supervise undergraduate students.

Job Description

As a Lecturer Cardiff Law School the successful applicant will be required to deliver high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and potentially postgraduate level. The successful applicant should be an active and collegiate member of the school community and contribute to every aspect of school life.  

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Scholarship

Engage in scholarly activity with the potential to publish journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work. 

Have the potential to contribute to scholarship through working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community. 

Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in  conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums (at local and national level) to disseminate the results of individual scholarship. 

Develop scholarship projects which have potential to receive internal or external funding.  

To actively participate in School scholarship activities and contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community. 

Carry out work associated with teaching including examinations (setting and marking papers and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work. 

Teaching

Contribute to the design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team, where required 

Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students and deliver effective teaching under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students. 

Deliver pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust. 

Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGRs, where required.  

To demonstrate a commitment to professional development and engage in the peer review processes.  

To participate in the teaching community including committee membership and student engagement activities.

Collegiality and Community

Be a collaborative, collegiate colleague with a commitment to engage in the life of the School and contribute fully to the community, teaching, scholarship and administrative activities. Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile. 

Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer. 

Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development 

Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.   

Any other duties appropriate to support the development ambitions of the role not included above, but consistent with the role.
