ARC Wessex is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), with a remit to support applied health and care research that responds to, and meets, the needs of local populations and local health and care systems. It is one of 15 ARCs across England, part of a £135 million investment by the NIHR to improve the health and care of patients and the public within nationally. ARC Wessex has four thematic programmes of work: Ageing and Dementia, Healthy Communities, Long Term Conditions and Workforce & Health systems, and includes projects focussed on Social Care and Mental Health. We have a close relationship with our stakeholders across the region, including NHS organisations, local universities, the voluntary and charitable sector, and local authorities.
We are pleased to offer an exciting learning and development opportunity in collaboration with Public Policy|Southampton to an early to mid-career post-doctoral researcher interested in increasing their skills and knowledge related to policy impact and supporting evidence-informed policy making.
The Public Policy Fellow will be eligible for an NIHR academy membership and will work via a placement with Public Policy|Southampton to contribute to the ARC Wessex Public Policy work programme which aims to:
upskill researchers on the types of data and information needed to influence policymakers in their field of research enhance the local, sub-national, national and international public policy impact of the ARC Wessex research portfolio.The post holder will apply with a suggested project or idea that aims to influence policy relevant to the above programme aims, and aligned to one, or more, of the ARC Wessex themes.
The successful candidate will have: a relevant PhD qualification, a publication track-record commensurate with stage of career in an ARC Wessex related field of applied health research, as well as a willingness to build skills in promoting their research and influencing public policy.
We are looking to offer these fellowship opportunities to ambitious individuals with the confidence to connect with policy makers in their field of research; engage with collaborators and stakeholders at all levels of seniority, across regions and sectors of the health and care system; and a willingness to work with research partners across the NIHR ARC network. You will be self-motivated, have excellent verbal communication and writing skills, demonstrable ability to meet project milestones within agreed timelines and produce work of high quality.
The fellowships are available for either 0.4 FTE for up to 6 months or pro rata at 0.2 FTE for up to 12 months (contracts cannot run beyond 31st April 2026) and will be based at the offices of Public Policy|Southampton Highfield Campus, University of Southampton, with access to ARC Wessex hot desks at Chilworth Science Park. The employing organisation will be the University of Southampton which offers a pension scheme and other benefits. Subject to the agreement of all parties involved, the fellowships could be offered on a secondment basis.
