Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Newcastle University Full time

Company description:

We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.

Job description:

Salary:

Research Assistant : £31,396 to £32,982 per annum

Research Associate : £33,966 to £44,263 per annum

The Role

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for a Research Assistant/Associate to join the School of Engineering, contributing to our latest Innovate UK grant project, "MARGE - Mignon Automated Hardware Generation for Embedded Machine Learning Applications," funded by the NorthEast Launchpad Competition.

We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in hardware design and the implementation of machine learning accelerator systems. Proficiency in electronic design automation tools and Python programming for high-level model-based simulations is essential. For more detailed information, please refer to the job description linked below.

The MARGE project, led by Literal Labs—a Newcastle University spinout—in collaboration with Newcastle University and PragmatIC, aims to revolutionise software design automation over the next 18 months. By integrating data pre-processing and machine learning algorithms inspired by the Tsetlin Machine principles, the project will develop tools to generate scalable hardware architectures through tailored modularisation and optimisation. These tools will be validated with two independent case studies: an accelerator prototype on embedded FPGA platforms with Literal Labs, and an application-specific integrated circuit prototype on flexible substrates with PragmatIC.

You will be affiliated to Microsystems Research Group, and work with the collaborators to ensure the above case studies can be designed, implemented, and validated. Besides having the technological know-how, being able to work in a team and communicating effectively are essential attributes for this role.

The Microsystems Group at Newcastle has international leadership with pioneering research in microelectronics design and computer systems engineering. The group comprises 12 academic members, over 13 Research Assistants/Associates, and more than 30 PhD students. Over the last 5 years, the group has secured funding exceeding £22 million from EPSRC and other funding organizations, spun out two companies, and generated numerous prototype microchips. We are looking for an ambitious researcher to join this thriving team environment.

This full-time position (37 hours per week) is available immediately on a fixed-term basis for 12 months from the start date, with the possibility of extension.
