Applications are invited for a full-time Research Associate in Health Economics to work in the Primary Care Unit of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care.

The successful candidate will undertake health economic analyses being conducted as part of a CRUK-funded project evaluating the 'Test, Evidence, Transition' (TET) programme. This is a UK-based multi-partner, collaborative, mixed-methods project involving the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The post holder will also contribute to activities within the new NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU) on cancer awareness, screening and early diagnosis, working with policy-makers to translate research into policy.

Main duties and responsibilities of the job:

  • Construct health economic models to assess the cost-effectiveness of different investigation strategies to improve colorectal cancer detection.
  • Lead health economic data collection in collaboration with the wider team to populate these models.
  • Produce health economic measures of the kind typically used by NICE when making their recommendations.
  • Lead the writing of health economics research outputs, including publishing in internationally leading journals.
  • Work with the TET and PRU project teams, developing ideas and analysis collaboratively with other team members, and attending project meetings.

Applicants should possess a PhD in health economics or a related discipline and be able to demonstrate skills and/or experience in the following areas:

  • Undertaking health economic modelling to evaluate cost-effectiveness
  • Ability to produce health economic measures of the kind typically used by NICE
  • Using statistical packages (e.g., Stata) and MS Excel
  • Knowledge of the UK National Health Service
  • Knowledge of economic evaluations of innovations for the early detection of cancer
  • Experience and skills of developing stochastic simulation models
  • Ability to write and contribute to publications and make presentations at conferences
  • Good time management skills and the ability to cope with a variety of work demands and deadlines
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and collaborate with other researchers
  • Providing health economics input into research studies
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently and unsupervised, manging own workload of complex tasks and competing priorities
  • Teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels

*Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD. Where a PhD has yet to be, awarded appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded (PhD needs to be awarded within 6 months of the start date).
