About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to become a core part of a team working in the field of low-loss hollow-core optical fibres.

The project is funded by a major optical fibre producer, Sumitomo Electric Industries, who will be working as a part of the team at the University.

Within the project there are opportunities for developing the field in numerous ways, including:

  • Identifying novel/modified fibre designs with the potential to outperform current state-of-the-art
  • Deepening understanding of the behaviour of new and existing fibre structures using both theory and experiment
  • Further developing advanced fabrication processes to demonstrate high-performance fibres, including long fibre lengths
  • Demonstrating the lowest-attenuation optical fibre ever reported

This role would suit an imaginative researcher with a selection of the following:

  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant research area
  • Good working knowledge of optics & photonics
  • Familiar with optical laboratory techniques
  • Understanding of the value of numerical simulations, computer literate
  • Enjoys achieving
  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team

About us:

The University of Bath has a long-standing track record of transformative innovation in the field of novel optical fibres. We use our bespoke optical fibre fabrication equipment alongside characterisation laboratories & different numerical and analytical tools to generate influential and important advances. The broader team of researchers in this area in the department includes researchers at all career stages with a wide range of expertise, providing a natural environment for rapid progress.

The purpose of this project is to use our existing expertise combined with the complementary knowledge of our industrial sponsor to advance new forms of optical fibre to real-world applications.

Our ambition for the project is to work as a team to generate scientific results which are of global importance, while having fun doing so
