Research Assistant in Cryogenic Fluid Dynamics

Cranfield, United Kingdom Cranfield University Full time

Fixed Term Contract until 31 March 2027

Full time starting salary is £28,203 to £31,230 per annum

We invite applications for this new post in an emerging field, contributing to a funded project focused on constructing and operating test rigs for liquid and vapor hydrogen systems, designed specifically for hydrogen-powered civil aviation.

About the Role

We seek a highly motivated Research Assistant to undertake simulations of fluid dynamics and system dynamics for LH2 systems, with a particular emphasis on 2-phase flow. They will provide crucial support to the cryogenic team, offering insights into simulation results and system performance to aid decision-making. They will also acquire and expand their knowledge on hydrogen and liquid hydrogen to aid the progress of our research.

Responsibilities also include analysing simulation results to assess system performance and optimise design, collaborating with cross-functional teams to incorporate simulation findings into LH2 system design and development, staying updated on simulation techniques and tools, and contributing to research by participating in experimental testing, data analysis, and documentation of simulation methodologies, results and findings for internal reference and reporting purposes.

About You

You should possess an MSc/MEng in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering and demonstrate proficiency in simulating transient fluid, mechanical, and electric system performance using software packages. Applied programming skills and experience in numerical methods for solving ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs/PDEs) are essential. Strong fundamentals in heat and mass transfer, and a sound understanding of fuel and fluid-mechanical components and systems, are required. Experience in hydrogen fuel system developments in aerospace and familiarity with two-phase flow effects would be advantageous. Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills are necessary, along with the ability to work effectively as part of a team, good organisational skills, and proficiency in problem-solving. Experience in project or research management in aerospace-related projects and relevant industrial/practical experience would be beneficial, as well as a track record of contributing to writing papers and publications.
