Applications are invited for a full time Glaucoma Fellow appointment suitable for senior ophthalmology trainees who wish to pursue subspecialty training in glaucoma.

The goal of this fellowship training is to complement the basic knowledge gained in core specialty training in ophthalmology and to provide you with greater exposure to the diagnosis and management of a wide range of glaucoma disorders. There is great emphasis on clinical and surgical hands-on training to prepare you for a consultant post. The department has three consultant ophthalmologists who specialise in glaucoma along with a glaucoma nurse team.

The length of the educational program is 12 months (from August 2024 until August 2025) of full time education. This period may be extended if mutually agreed. This time includes appropriate short periods for vacation, special assignments, or exceptional individual circumstances approved by the supervisor. Ophthalmology requires an intensive continuum of training therefore it should not be interrupted by frequent and/or prolonged periods of absence

Main duties of the job

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.

Undertake all clinics and operating lists as specified in the timetable Participate in general on call rota Deal with administration related to patient management in a timely manner Deal with patient administration when consultant on leave Contribute to regular presentations and journal clubs Contribute to regional postgraduate teaching sessions Be contactable by mobile phone and email Undertake clinics at satellite locations Undertake clinical research and to aim to present work at Responsibility for both inpatient and outpatient care of patients

This role provides an excellent exposure to surgery with opportunities to improve techniques in the fields of glaucoma filtration surgery, bleb management, MIGS, cyclodiode laser therapy and phacoemulsification. Glaucoma tube implantation is occasionally performed and the aim would be for the Fellow to be involved with such cases as appropriate.The Fellow will be encouraged to take an active role in the day to day supervision of the junior medical staff/medical students and to contribute to their teaching.

All employees, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust's Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

Essential

Full registration with the GMC with License to Practice Basic medical qualification (MB BS or equivalent) MRCOphth or equivalent

Desirable

GMC with License to Practice Basic medical qualification (MB BS or equivalent) MRCOphth or equivalent Other relevant qualifications Certificate of eligibility for entry into higher specialist training (CEEHST), Royal College of Ophthalmologists (for UK applicants). A copy of the Certificate should be attached to the application or brought to interview

Aptitudes and skills required
Essential

Ability to take a detailed ophthalmic history, perform a good ophthalmic examination, put forward a differential diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan. Previous experience of managing glaucoma patients in out-patient setting Evidence of surgical dexterity

Desirable

Ability to manage the common ophthalmic emergencies. Publications Computer skills

Experience
Essential

At least 3 years recent experience in General Ophthalmology, in posts recognised for training by the appropriate Surgical Royal College Experience of unsupervised phako-emulsification cataract surgery

Desirable

Six months experience at SHO (StR equivalent) level in another relevant specialty e.g. General Medicine, A& E, Neurology and Neurosurgery. Experience of supervised intraocular and extraocular surgery
