Job summary

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Cashier/Accounts Clerk in Service Funds Accounting Section, RAF Henlow . Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due to RAF Henlow Station Closure. This post will therefore begin on your appointment and will end on 31/12/2026. You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.

If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 23 months). At the end of the posting you will return to your previous MoD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.

If you are transferring to MoD from another government department (OGD) you should join the MoD on an inward loan. At the end of the loan you will return to your home (OGD) department. This post is located within the Accounts and Business Support Team at RAF Henlow you will contribute to the delivery of an efficient finance department ensuring accurate and timely financial transactions. This Office forms part of the Station Support Unit which assists the station and station resident units enabling them to achieve on their outputs. The Cashier/Accounts Clerk role is responsible for the day-to-day Service Funds Cashiering, Mess Accounts and Public Accounts operating requirements.

The successful candidate should be a proactive team player, a self-motivated individual, well organized, able to work accurately with a positive attitude, adapting quickly to change ensuring that reporting deadlines are met, ability to communicate clearly and effectively at various levels; build good working relationships; and be able to discuss issues with more senior staff, to appreciate the importance of accuracy and resolve/contribute to the resolution of accounting issues.

Job description

  • Provide a cashier service for both Public and Non Public Funds on Station adhering to the rules and controls in place. Receipt and disbursement of cash and cheques.
  • Process or raise payments and issue invoices or recoveries using MOD Systems ensuring compliance with policy and procedures.
  • Administration of RAF Henlow Station Payments and Grants.
  • Enter Income and Expenditure report and Invoices for RAF Henlow Officers’ Mess & RAF Henlow Sergeants’ Mess using SAGE accounting software. Preparation of the monthly statement of accounts.
  • Provide advice to the Fund OIC's, Committee Members and Auditors on all things relating to Service Funds.

Person specification

In order to carry out the role, the successful candidate will be required to attend the Public Accounts Course at Worthy Down and attain the Financial Skills Certificate Foundation level, within 6 months of taking up the post. A good working knowledge of Excel & SAGE along with accounts experience is desirable but not essential.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.
