London, United Kingdom King's College London Full time

About Us

The Department of Geography at King’s College London is a vibrant hub of multi-disciplinary scholarship that seeks to address and resolve the most pressing issues facing our world today. By drawing together a unique cohort of scholars, the Department includes expertise in global environmental governance, the physical and social science dimensions of climate change, cross-border migration, emerging economies, and politics.

About the Role

The purpose of this role is to work on the UK Research and Innovation Future Leader’s Fellowship: Reducing Global Catastrophic Risks from Unseen Climate Extremes.

The appointed candidate will work within a team of physical and social scientists to help identify the most pressing threats to humanity from ‘unseen’ climate extremes – those events which lack a historical precedent, but which could occur in the relatively near future.

The researcher will be responsible for analysing very large multidimensional climate datasets to identify and characterise such novel events under different climate states (e.g., levels of global warming). Although the analysis will initially target the hazard of extreme heat, the search should ultimately encompass a wider set of climate threats. The ability to problem solve and work independently will be key for this role.

This is a full-time post and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until June 2028

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. A PhD in climate science, meteorology, or a cognate discipline
  2. An excellent understanding of the physical processes driving climate and weather extremes
  3. Expertise in using computer programming to analyse large, multidimensional climate datasets
  4. Experience in publishing scientific articles
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills
  6. An excellent ability to problem solve and work independently

Desirable criteria

  1. Familiarity with the JASMIN data analysis facility
  2. Expertise in the hazard of extreme heat
  3. Competence in statistical analysis and/or machine learning, especially for downscaling
  4. Experience of working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary context

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

Interviews are due to be held in June 2024.

We are able to offer sponsorship for candidates who do not currently possess the right to work in the UK. Please note this is dependent on the salary offered which is based on your experience and will be discussed at the offer stage.

Closing date: 27 May 2024

£43,205 to £45,521 per annum, including London Weighting Allowance.
