Senior Collections & House Officer - Birmingham

Are you a proven manager of collections or houses? Can you bring your conservation knowledge to this close knit team? We need someone who can champion fantastic collections care and practice, visitor welcome and the day to day operation of managing volunteers to give great experiences.

This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months.

What it's like to work here

The Back to Backs is a small team and although you'll be the only member of the Collections & House team at the property you'll not be alone. You'll line manage a dedicated team of Housekeeping & Conservation volunteers who will help look after the houses and the collection onsite.

As part of the Birmingham & Black Country Portfolio there's lots of interesting things happening and you're time with us will likely be fast-paced and keep you very busy. From project work and involvement in programming, to ensuring our conservation plan remains on track, as well as being part of the duty management team, there's always something to be getting on with.

As part of the duty management team you'll be responsible for opening and closing the site on a given day. You'll ensure that the team who are in know what their day will look like, look after the volunteers to deliver the guided tours and ensure that the site is safe and ready to open.

What you'll be doing

As the senior lead of the House Team, you’ll manage a team of volunteers to implement preventive conservation and cleaning programmes in the house to ensure excellent standards of care, delivering strategies to improve conservation. You’ll be responsible for the planning and implementation of conservation projects, collections care and daily opening of the house ensuring appropriate resources are in place to provide a consistent and excellent visitor experience.

You'll collect and accurately record information to inform our understanding of the house and the collection and use preventive conservation techniques to improve how we conserve, interpret and present the property. Leading by example you’ll ensure a culture of excellent customer care, engaging our visitors with conservation and the values and behaviours of the National Trust.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you have; 

outstanding people leadership skills and experience of working with and managing volunteershave operational experience of collections management and care in an historic environment including relevant collections management systemsdemonstrate a solid understanding of preventive conservation and its practical, strategic application in the form of routine and deep cleaning programmesknowledge of Health and Safety and Emergency Proceduresgood organisational skills, with strong attention to detailstrong communication skills
