We invite applications from talented individuals with a background in computer science, proficiency in formal methods, and a genuine enthusiasm for delving into the social implications of technology.

Research Focus:

The primary objective of this doctoral research is to develop an innovative interdisciplinary socio-technical framework that bridges the realms of social science (trust) and computer science (safety). Our aim is to evaluate how AI technical solutions impact social trust within society.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in cross-disciplinary research to develop an open-source framework for evaluating the societal impact of AI.
  • Collaborate with industrial partners to conducting interviews, collect and analyse data from diverse stakeholder groups across different domains.
  • Uphold Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles to ensure ethical standards are maintained.

Qualifications:

We are seeking candidates who hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, possess practical experience in AI, and demonstrate a strong interest in qualitative research methodologies. The ideal candidate will have proficiency in formal methods and a solid foundation in AI technologies. And a passion for learning and applying qualitative research methods.

Why Join Us?

This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of technology and society. As a doctoral candidate, you will have the chance to work closely with leading experts in both academia and industry, shaping the future of AI policy and innovation.

Funding:

Funding for this project is offered by the Centre for Doctoral Training in Complex Integrated Systems for Defence & Security (CISDnS), which will recruit motivated and inquisitive candidates across the themes of Digital, Physical and Biological systems to provide a diverse and interconnected cohort training environment. As well as carrying out research training in a world-leading research group, membership of CISDnS will provide the opportunity for you to be exposed and trained to handle the interdisciplinary challenges faced in the real-world via a Systems Thinking approach. You will learn about the wider challenges of research and innovation within the Defence & Security sector from both your peers and the numerous industry partners supporting the Centre.

This PhD studentship is open only to UK applicants.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: 30th June 2024.

Funding: Full-time studentships will cover UK course fees and an enhanced tax-free stipend of approx. £23,500 per year for 4 years along with a substantial budget for research, travel, and centre activities.
