This is a unique opportunity for a Junior Electronics Development Engineer, who wants to really develop and progress their engineering skills, working in an exciting engineering and science environment, offering excellent employee benefits and delivering operational technology solutions to make London safer.

The Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) team keeps the Met at the cutting-edge of tech. Its work is highly innovative and no two projects are ever the same. Some initiatives involve undertaking research with academia or exploring new off-the-shelf technologies. Others involve modifying commercially available products, or creating our own.

Delivery of our solutions involves the complete life-cycle from developing requirements with customers, producing design solutions and turning these designs into a fully functional product or system for operational use.

As a Junior Electronics Development Engineer, you will be part of the Electronics System Development (ESD) team developing niche electronic solutions to unique business issues. A key attribute to being successful in the role will be an ability to work closely with Engineers from multiple disciplines. You will provide support to Electronic Development Engineers in their tasks of designing, building / prototyping, testing and evaluating electronic solutions.

Under the guidance of a development engineer, you will work in a team of engineers assisting in producing designs and turning these into fully functional products or systems for operational use in the field. The work will include some design elements, building, prototyping, manufacture, assembly and exhaustively testing items before deployments and providing accurate test reports.

The role is varied and on any typical day you may be involved in a number of activities including assisting with software and hardware development projects, assisting with or carrying out electronics design, testing, participating in project meetings, design reviews / workshops and meeting with customers or suppliers as well as helping with all aspects of the support to the ESD team. You will also carry out the production of parts including the fabrication of PCBs, cables, assemblies etc. and the sourcing components / equipment where required for assembly into larger systems. The role holder may also be offered the opportunity to participate in occasional operational or field work alongside operational colleagues and officers.

You will be also be supported in working towards achieving professional engineering registration.

Vetting

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e level before taking up the post; with a willingness to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) once in post, if required.

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e OR Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.
