At AstraZeneca, we are committed to integrating sustainability into our business strategy and operations. We are seeking a Senior Product Environmental Specialist to join our Global Sustainability & SHE (Safety Health and Environment) function. This role is pivotal in ensuring the environmental safety of our products with a focus on packaging and devices. In addition, for the Respiratory & Immunology (R&I) therapy area, you will play a key role in the Next Generation Propellant (NGP) programme for our inhaled portfolio of pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs).

Accountabilities:

You will maintain a deep understanding of current legislation and future legislative trends to ensure the continued delivery of life-changing medicines to patients. You will also represent AstraZeneca on relevant cross-pharma industry groups to share best practice and advocate at sector level on emerging legislation concerning pharmaceutical packaging and devices and inhaled medicines.

You will work with internal and external partners to develop evidence-based responses to relevant legislative consultations (e.g. EU F Gas Directive, proposed EU PFAS Restriction proposal) and build networks with functional and site technical leads to influence in line with Global Environmental Protection strategies e.g. Ambition Zero Carbon and Nature.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Degree in a scientific, environmental sustainability, chemistry, or engineering discipline or equivalent

  • Experience in environmental sustainability assessment of packaging, devices, and medical propellants

  • An understanding of the pharmaceutical sector, in particular, knowledge of the drug development process and manufacturing value chains

  • Experience of interacting with a wide range of stakeholders, across discipline interfaces, different organisational cultures and with external collaborators

  • Ability to interpret complex situations and information in order to provide strategy steers with clarity

  • Experience in managing budgets, projects and/or deliverables to tight timelines

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams

Desirable:

  • Detailed knowledge of relevant legislation and policy associated with product environmental impact assessments of medicines

  • Familiarity with environmental management systems such as ISO 14001

  • Experience in a global pharmaceutical corporate team, manufacturing, engineering, or a research & development environment.

When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That's why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. But that doesn't mean we're not flexible. We balance the expectation of being in the office while respecting individual flexibility. Join us in our unique and ambitious world.

At AstraZeneca, we are driven by our commitment to deliver accelerated growth and to make people's lives better. We thrive in our often intense and ambiguous environment, seeking out new challenges and working towards new solutions. We are part of an inclusive and giving community, supporting each other on our journeys.
