Cranfield, United Kingdom Cranfield University Full time

Location: Cranfield University

Supervisors: Professor Panos Laskaridis

A fully funded PhD studentship and great opportunity to work closely with a leading European Research Consortium at the forefront of Sustainable Aviation to research and develop novel technologies for hydrogen and zero emission aircraft. We are looking for enthusiastic, inquisitive and motivated researchers to join a diverse and inclusive research group focusing on the decarbonisation of aviation. This is a European research project for the development of hybrid fuel cell propulsion systems.

About the Research

This European research project aims to develop hybrid fuel cell propulsion systems, focusing on:

  • Developing, modelling, and assessing innovative energy management and control strategies.
  • Integrating solid oxide fuel cells with hydrogen-powered gas turbine propulsion systems.

Your primary task will be to develop an advanced Model Predictive Controller for novel gas turbines integrated with solid oxide fuel cells. The objective is to optimise the overall operation and performance of these hybrid propulsion systems to maximise efficiency, ensure safe operation, minimise emissions, and extend component and system life.

Your Role

As a researcher, you will join Cranfield University's experienced team, which specialises in the development, integration, and evaluation of novel aircraft and propulsion technologies.

The team has extensive experience with electrified propulsion and aircraft technologies. Additionally, you will collaborate with other internationally renowned commercial, research, and academic organisations specialising in fuel cells, electrified aircraft, control systems, and gas turbine engines.

Opportunities and Impact

Your findings and outcomes will contribute to the development of innovative solutions and methods with the potential to revolutionise aviation, leading to the next generation of sustainable and environmentally friendly aircraft. This research will also inform future research strategies, technology roadmaps, and the development of test campaigns and flying demonstrators. You will also explore technologies related to electric motors, power electronics, batteries, and their integration with gas turbines and fuel cells.

Professional Development

You will work closely with international experts, specialists, and technology managers, offering opportunities to:

  • Interact with team members from Cranfield and a leading European Research Consortium.
  • Attend national and international events and conferences.
  • Engage with world-class research capabilities and strong international links.

Benefits

  • Contribute to the future of green aviation.
  • Develop system engineering skills related to electrified power and propulsion technologies for zero-emission aircraft.
  • Be at the forefront of research in Net Zero Aviation and sustainability.
  • Gain multidisciplinary research and technology skills.
  • Join a world-class team and build your professional network.
  • Enhance your management, presentation, planning, communication, and technical skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a good first degree in electrical, or aerospace, or mechatronics , or control engineering or computing, maths or physics or any other relevant topic. An MSc or relevant work experience will be beneficial. Knowledge of system and control engineering practises can be beneficial.
