Associate Professor in Life Cycle Assessment

We are looking for an expert in Life Cycle Assessment to assess the environmental and social impact of critical material supply chains and engage with stakeholders across a wide range of disciplines including industry, academia, policy makers and the wider public (including the media). The postholder would be based in Metallurgy and Materials but they would have access to academics from across the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials. This would give the successful candidate access to world leading data on the supply chain steps for processing of critical materials including, for example, rare earth elements and battery materials. The candidate will work closely with the co-directors of BCSECM to help set the strategic direction of the centre and to lead large multidisciplinary research projects on critical materials.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a good first degree together with a PhD in an environmental science, engineering or science based subject or any subject with a component of Life Cycle Assessment. The candidate should have a good track record of engaging industry to develop LCA’s on industrially relevant processes.

The Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials (BCSECM) was established to unite the significant research activity at the University of Birmingham in the area of strategic elements and critical materials and provide a forum to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in this field. The BCSECM was launched in March 2017 and it encompasses expertise from across the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Energy Institute in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Economics, Law, Materials Science, Physics and Social Science. The experts within the centre all have the common aim of addressing the challenges posed by supply constraints for strategic elements and critical materials.

BCSECM run large scale interdisciplinary projects on for example - Recycling of Lithium Ion Batteries (ReLIB), funded by the ISCF Faraday Institute and on Rare Earth Recycling (SCREAM and SUSMAGPRO) funded by Innovate UK and by the EU respectively. The developed technologies are being scaled at higher TRL levels at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham.

Main Duties

Education 

You will contribute across the range of teaching and learning activities:

  • making a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and/or through practice-based research; 
  • leading on the management and the development of approaches to teaching and learning, including designing innovative approaches to digital resources/environments and supporting colleagues to use them that are innovative to the subject area or institution;

Person Specification

  • Normally, a higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • Demonstrated excellence in at least Research, with competence in Learning and Teaching and Management and Administration.
