PhD Studentship in Life Cycle and Techno-Economic Assessment of Energy Storage Technologies

Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

Supervised by Dr Serik Tokbolat and Prof Jo Darkwa

Aim: To investigate and perform the life cycle and techno-economic assessment of various thermochemical energy storage technologies in the context of industrial waste heat application

Background: Waste heat generated by UK industry and power generation sectors exceeds the UK’s total annual electricity demand by around thirty percent. Industrial waste heat sources alone account for around one sixth of the overall industrial yearly energy use. Apart from the industrial sector, there is also vast amount of waste heat from renewable energy sources such as solar and geothermal. It is therefore imperative to utilise efficiently all possible waste heat. Thermochemical energy storage technologies (TCES) have been identified to have higher potential for stable and efficient energy storage owing to their intrinsic advantages. Whole lifecycle environmental assessment and techno-economic assessment methodologies will be adopted to assess the viability of various thermochemical energy storage technologies.

Entry Requirements: Starting October 2024, we require an enthusiastic graduate with a 1st class degree in Engineering or Architectural Environment Engineering, or a relevant discipline, at an integrated Master’s level or with a relevant MSc (in exceptional circumstances a 2:1 degree can be considered).

For any enquiries about the project and the funding please email Serik Tokbolat (serik.tokbolat@nottingham.ac.uk)

Deadline: The position will be filled as soon as a suitable person has been found; hence you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Funding Notes: The position is a 36-month programme and is supported either by a full home (UK) studentship or full international fees options.
