The Opportunity

Abbott Rapid Diagnostics is part of Abbottâs Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry leading technologies to support diagnostic testing which provides important information for treatment and management of diseases and other conditions.

The position of Laboratory Operations Manager oversees all day-to-day operations within the Toxicology Laboratory team, and directly manages Laboratory Section Managers. The Laboratory provides analytical toxicology services to numerous sectors, including law enforcement, drug treatment, family law and workplace drug testing. The role is based in Abingdon but requires occasional travel to different sites within the UK and potentially the US.

What Youâll Do

  • Prioritise workloads and manage resources effectively and efficiently to meet Laboratory KPIs
  • Ensure continued compliance with all quality, regulatory and legal requirements (ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 accreditation, and GLP)
  • Liaise with Quality to record and close non-conformities and CAPAs within appropriate timeframes
  • Actively engage in the resolution of customer queries and complaints
  • Continuous improvement  - work closely with the Method Development and Commercial Teams to review overall laboratory processes and analytical laboratory methods, identify and suggest future direction
  • Carry out monthly one-to-ones with all direct reports, develop training plans to ensure sufficient expertise and capability in all laboratory areas
  • Support preparation of annual budget, forecasting
  • Accountable for stock and suppliers/contracts
  • Actively engage with business developments, working closely with the Business Systems and Commercial Teams
  • Play an instrumental role in software updates and future LIMs changes, plan for, support and oversee testing of these changes. 

Required Qualifications

  • BSc Science degree, ideally in analytical chemistry, toxicology or pharmacology or equivalent
  • Previous laboratory experience in the analysis of drugs using immunoassays and LCMS/MS, and interpretation of the associated data
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment, preferably ISO 17025
  • Commercially aware
  • Experience of planning and successfully delivering laboratory projects
  • Experience of managing a budget is highly desirable
