Working as part of a team of talented and highly motivated teachers the Head of Music will have oversight of the Music programme and will take responsibility for the maintenance of the Schemes of Work (KS3, 4 and 5) as well as the organisation of our annual whole school Music Concert.

The role will work closely with the Director of Performing Arts and includes all aspects of the wider role of leading Music and its teaching and performance in the School. The nature of ArtsEd means that pupils’ enthusiasm for the study of Music is encouraged by imaginative, varied and challenging courses at all levels of the School.

Our ethos is one of shared responsibility to which all teachers make a significant contribution. An integral part of this role is the planning, preparation, rehearsal, and performance of large and small scale productions within the School’s Performing Arts programme.

 All staff at ArtsEd are expected to sustain and improve the quality of training and education that is offered to the pupils in the school.

Department specific duties and responsibilities: 

To lead the Music Department through effective teaching, professional vision and knowledge To keep abreast of all relevant examination and assessment specifications, meeting all deadlines To maintain and monitor appropriate records of pupils’ learning and achievements, curricular records, and assessments To plan and manage Music productions in school, including the audition process To direct groups at rehearsals, and live or recorded performances, in order to achieve desired quality To write and review the Music Department Development Plan To maintain and develop schemes of work relating to the requirements of KS3 and the Examination Boards at KS4 and KS5, working collaboratively where appropriate To take part in the appointment of staff to the Department and in the drawing up of their job descriptions To appoint and manage the peripatetic music staff, and be responsible for the administration of peripatetic music lessons  Oversight of the preparation and entrance of pupils for public examinations such as ABRSM, Trinity Board examinations  To arrange, in consultation with members of the Department, the deployment of those members in the timetable To support all members of the Department in maintaining sound discipline within the school's agreed policies  To monitor the quality of teaching and learning within the Department and to ensure that curricular records are kept and that reports are written To supervise the use and care of the rooms assigned to Music classes, including adherence to relevant Health and Safety regulations in studios and other facilities To devise and implement a rehearsal programme resulting in student productions that meet (and hopefully exceed) the expectations of a specialist school with a performing arts focus. This might result in spending additional time after school, on occasional Saturdays and in the half term breaks To rehearse students to be confident when performing enabling them to achieve success, be it for an exam or production To co-ordinate backstage support and steward teams for all Music productions To supervise the use and care of the rooms assigned to staff, including adherence to relevant Health and Safety regulations in studios and other facilities 

 

School wide duties and responsibilities: 

To maintain and monitor appropriate records of pupils’ learning and achievements To ensure that health and safety issues are properly understood, and procedures followed  

       effectively and consistently 

To maintain effective discipline through implementation of the school agreed procedures To take part in the Performance Management Programme To maintain effective discipline through implementation of the school’s agreed policies and procedures To carry out general school supervisory duties if required to do so To attend Open Evenings, Parents Evenings, School performances and other relevant events To attend and contribute to meetings for the department and others as requested
