A number of exciting opportunities have arisen within the Trust for senior doctors to take up a Clinical Teacher position within the Medical Education Department.

This position offers a rewarding opportunity to create and participate in the delivery of mental health teaching to medical students placed within KMPT.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic individual that works to the highest standards, is able to think autonomously and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

The successful candidate will be accountable to the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, reporting to the Deputy Director of Undergraduate Medical Education when in post.

The post is offered for a fixed term period of 12 months initially.

JOB TITLE: Clinical Tutor in Undergraduate Medical Education (Psychiatry)

BAND: SAS or Consultant. Dependant on postholders current experience

CARE GROUP: Medical Directorate

DEPARTMENT: Medical Education

HOURS OF WORK: 1 Programmed Activity per week (Annualised hours)

33 Thursday afternoon teachings (except for 3 induction days where teaching will be on the Monday morning) time to prepare for each of the 11 different teaching days. End of academic year revision day.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Undergraduate Medical Education

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director of Medical Education

BASE: Medical Postgraduate Centres, with teaching in a central Kent location.

This job description is an outline of the key tasks and responsibilities of the post and the post holder may be required to undertake additional duties. The post may change over time to reflect the developing needs of the department, as well as the personal development of the post holder. Due to the current ways of working we may need to adapt to the changing educational needs of medical students.

JOB PURPOSE:

The post holder will have a regular schedule of teaching commitments and will actively contribute to the development and delivery of the Trusts Undergraduate education programme for students who are placed with the trust for mental health exposure.

Kent and Medway Medical School approximately 44 year 3 students at any one time. Year 5 students starting in September 2024

Guys Kings and St Thomas approximately 30 year 4 students at any one time.

St Georges International Medical School (Grenada) approximately 2-4 students.

KEY RESULT AREAS:
To support the Director of Undergraduate Psychiatry and departmental educational leads To work with the Medical Education Managers and the Undergraduate Administrators To contribute to the delivery of educational programmes To evaluate and improve educational programmes To support and develop collaborations in education inside the trust and externally. To contribute to developing a range of educational materials: website content, interactive platforms, e-learning modules, written materials or handbooks
RESPONSIBILITY:

The post holder will organise or work closely with other professionals to develop and deliver teaching to medical students.

As part of delivering teaching to medical students there will be allocated times where expert patients and subject experts will input into teaching sessions. The post holder will support the session and offer guidance to the expert and students in preparation of the session.

The post holder may work closely with the Medical Education team throughout the post on the following projects:

Medical Student teaching

Development of in-house e-learning resources

Audit as part of Medical Education

Medical Education Quality Monitoring

Faculty Development Teaching

Administrative support will be offered on all projects.

ENVIRONMENT:

The post holder will be expected to deliver teaching to medical students in person at various locations within Kent.

The post holder may be required to deliver material virtually where face to face teaching is not viable.

The post holder will sit within the medical education team and be supported with resources (such as IT and Library facilities) in order to fulfil their role.

JOB SUMMARY:

The post holder, in collaboration with the Trust Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, will take a lead role in developing and delivering the in-house teaching programme for undergraduate medical students undertaking Psychiatry placements within the Trust. This will include contributing to regular student induction days, coordinating fellow psychiatric trainees to teach students, organizing and delivering clinical interview skills simulation training, participate in the development of self-directed learning packages which may include e-learning for certain modules.

The post holder will respond to student feedback regarding the teaching programme in order to ensure an appropriate range and level of teaching topics is provided. There will be opportunities to audit aspects of undergraduate programmes.

The post will offer adult learning opportunities allowing the postholder to develop educational insight, skills and can contribute to a portfolio of work linked to a PGCert or to support AoME membership. This will include lecturing and small group work with medical undergraduates

The post holder will have administrative and practical support from Medical Education Administrators.

The post holder will be supported to attend faculty development days.

The post holder will be supervised by the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education which will include setting objectives and agreeing a personal development plan.

The post is ideally suited to someone pursing a Post graduate Certificate in Medical Education.
