Cardiff, United Kingdom SRK Consulting Full time
Consultant (Geotechnical Engineering), Cardiff, UK
Cardiff, UK

SRK Consulting is an independent, international consulting practice, providing globally integrated consulting services to the international mining and metals sector.

We are seeking a Consultant (Geotechnical Engineering), Cardiff, UK.

Description of Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Staff Consultant (Geotechnical Engineer) to join an experienced geotechnical engineering team based in Cardiff, UK.

This opportunity will involve working on a diverse range of engineering studies related to international mining projects with multi-disciplinary teams both in the UK and overseas. International travel will be required.

This is a permanent opportunity for graduates typically with a soil geotechnics background, but we will also consider graduates with other directly applicable qualifications, relevant work experience and previous exposure to the mining sector.

Work Stream

The Tailings Team forms part of the Geotechnical Engineering Group within the Mining Department in SRK Consulting (UK) Ltd and contributes to projects in a variety of ways. The work undertaken by the Tailings Team is mainly focussed on the following areas:
Technical Studies (Scoping; Prefeasibility; Feasibility; Design for Construction) of tailings storage facilities, waste dumps and other infrastructure. Site selection and permitting. Design, supervision and reporting of geotechnical ground investigations. Construction Monitoring and Supervision. Site performance monitoring during operation. Mine site closure and rehabilitation. Independent Engineer Reviews, Audits and Due Diligence, with recent focus on the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (August 2020).
We aim to provide an interesting, varied, and challenging work environment for everyone in the team. This is enhanced by the opportunities presented through working within multi-disciplinary teams of mining professionals across a wide spectrum of disciplines. Most of our work involves projects in Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and North & South America, depending upon where our clients' projects are located. Our clients include a wide variety of mining companies, financial organisations, and government bodies.

The role will include:

Support of ongoing and planned geotechnical field programmes (will necessitate time spend overseas). Development of factual and interpretive geotechnical reporting. Technical analysis of slope stability and ground performance for use in design of tailings storage facilities, waste dumps and other infrastructure. Contribution to the development of technical reports for projects at varies stages of development. Assisting with the geotechnical aspects of multi-disciplinary project development studies. Representing SRK professionally to SRK's clients.

Essential Requirements:

Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a similar relevant technical subject. The right to work in the UK. Innovative and clear thinking, able to work independently but also be effective within a team whilst working on complex problems with tight timescales. Experience of the following will also be highly regarded: having previously undertaken a similar role, including experience of international mining projects; limit equilibrium and finite element modelling; coding skills; geotechnical data-base management.
Working Conditions

Primarily office based in Cardiff, however it is likely that frequent overseas travel will be necessary, involving working in a variety of climatic and geographic terrains in addition to working in various mining and mineral processing operations.

Travel to overseas countries will frequently involve flying in-country using internal airlines. Extensive road travel to site locations when overseas is also usually necessary and road conditions can often be poor, especially outside the major cities.

The visiting of mining operations will be done in accordance with the client's health and safety policies with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following the correct risk assessments.

Physical Requirements

Much of the work includes site visits and field programmes, and thus can be quite physical involving long periods of walking and standing, possibly some climbing and carrying of equipment and supplies.

Continuing Professional Development

It is the policy of SRK to provide employees with access to training. SRK regards Professional Registration for engineers, geologists and scientists as being fundamental to the advancement of both the company and the individual. Individuals are encouraged to attend relevant courses and conferences, and coaching and mentorship will be provided as required. This will include ongoing training to improve performance and service to clients and to ensure ongoing development of the individual. In addition, SRK will provide specialist training in First Aid and dealing with situations that may be encountered during travel overseas, especially to remote areas.

In return for considering a future with us, we offer:

An attractive compensation package. Diversity of projects and clients within a non-hierarchical consultancy environment. Opportunity to purchase shares in the company; the SRK Group is an independent group, owned by its employees.
