Helensburgh, United Kingdom Babcock International Group Full time

A lot of lives depend on the systems we maintain and deliver. So, we need to make sure they are safe even if something goes wrong. On this two-year programme, you’ll learn about how to identify, analyse and safeguard against hazards, failures and faults. In the process, you’ll develop your understanding of everything from production and manufacturing to project management, design and safety.

The aim of this programme is to give you a broad education in all areas of hazard management that will enable your development as a safety case author. You will conduct placements at several of our sites and projects, and training with safety case authors, human factors consultants, engineers of all disciplines, radiation protection advisors and specialists in assessing shielding requirements. We’re looking for graduates with a wide range of qualities, including high technical skills, good interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn and adapt to new circumstances.

Safety Case/Hazard Management at Babcock

As a safety case author your responsibility will be to evaluate the risks associated with nuclear operations conducted and demonstrate through provision of safety justifications that the risks are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).

This involves producing, maintaining, and developing an authorised/licensed suite of Site Safety Justification documentation to achieve the permissioning of nuclear facilities. Additionally, Safety Case Authors conduct assessments, providing independent technical evaluations of nuclear facilities and the associated systems, structures, and components.

Your work will support the safe construction, operation and decommissioning of civil nuclear facilities and Royal Navy submarines. You will be trained to comply with regulations and work with regulating bodies to provide hazard management advice for a wide range of engineering projects and sites using various methodologies across all stages of the site/facility lifecycle.

What you'll need
  • You’ll need a BSc or BEng (Hons) degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) subject.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Nuclear Science, such as an MSc or MEng, would be very useful.
  • The role is subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact your eligibility. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). For this role, you must be able to achieve and maintain SC clearance as a minimum.
What you'll get

We’ll provide you with a supportive and engaging environment where you can grow your career. In addition, you’ll benefit from:

  • A minimum of 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays, with agile working options subject to discussion with your manager
  • Generous pension and employee share schemes
  • Flexible benefits, including cycle to work scheme, discounts
  • Employee assistance programme supporting physical, mental and financial wellbeing

You’ll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach activities and volunteering opportunities.

Your career development

It’s hard to beat the variety of fantastic opportunities and business experiences you’ll receive. You can expect real world encounters and exposure to exciting projects that will really help you navigate where you want to take your career.

Plus, when you join us, you’ll be automatically enrolled onto our Graduate Development Programme. Through a series of digital and face to face sessions, presented by wellbeing and performance experts and our external partner Gen Healthy Minds, we will equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to thrive and perform at your very best on your programme and beyond.

Where you'll be based

Places on our Safety Case/Hazard Management programme for Autumn 2025 are available in our Nuclear sector at HM Naval Base Clyde. We ask our graduates to be flexible as there is the potential to undertake placements in other locations during their programme.
