We would like to invite applications for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal Surgery, based at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This post is for a Senior Trainee who has completed their General Surgery training to CCT level or equivalent (or are within 12 months of completion of CCT). More junior trainees will not be shortlisted.

Fellows can expect a broad case mix including super-specialist and general colorectal surgery with a particular emphasis on pelvic floor surgery including rectal prolapse and rectocele surgery, sphincter repair, complex anal and rectovaginal fistulae, sacral neuromodulation and minimally invasive approaches including robotic rectopexy. The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in pelvic floor, uro-gynaecology and mesh complication multi-disciplinary team meetings. The fellow will participate in the on-call rota at Specialty Registrar level (full shift, 1:10).

Candidates who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time are eligible to apply and, if successful, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will benefit from consultant-led training in the operating theatre. However, the successful applicant will be an experienced clinician and is expected to be able to make independent clinical decisions and care for surgical patients on a daily basis. Consequently, they will be expected to lead ward rounds, initiate changes in patient management and communicate with patients, their families and the wider surgical team. They will participate in out-patient clinic sessions, theatre lists and teach foundation doctors/medical students as required. They will present patients and attend the pelvic floor MDT.

The fellow can expect to gain experience in pelvic floor surgery including prolapse repair, sphincter repair, complex fistulae surgery and sacral nerve stimulation (temporary and permanent).

The fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in audit and research and will be supported and encouraged to take up leadership and service improvement roles.

The fellow will join the 1:10 full shift on-call rota in General Surgery at Specialty Registrar level.
