Job Introduction

Who are we and what do we do?

The BBC Proms is the largest classical music festival in the world presenting eight weeks of world-class performances from a vast array of renowned orchestras, conductors and soloists from the UK and around the world over the summer. The festival comprises over 80 performances at the Royal Albert Hall and other venues around the UK. Nearly everything we do is broadcast across BBC Radio, TV and online. We are a creative, innovative festival that connects with audiences around the UK and across the globe.

You would be part of a vibrant team that looks after Live Events, Communications, Marketing, Learning, Publications, and Business. You will build skills as part of the Accreditation team and get direct experience of working alongside and supporting the teams delivering this exciting festival, gaining an insight to the inner workings of this extraordinary production.

In any single week at the BBC Proms you could be working alongside events such as a London Symphony Orchestra Prom with conductor Sir Simon Rattle, a Northern Soul Prom, a Horrible Histories Prom, a City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Prom, a Chineke Prom and the BBC Orchestras and Choirs.

We want the Proms to be for everyone and are looking for people to help us do that.

The 2024 BBC Proms season will run from Friday 19 July - Saturday 14 September.

Main Responsibilities

The pool of freelance Accreditation Team members work primarily with the Live Events team supporting the delivery of the BBC Proms from July to September. Working closely with the Operations Project Manager, who will task manage them for events, the team's main role is to welcome artists and production staff on site at the Royal Albert Hall and support the planning, implementation and execution of the Accreditation system and processes.

They will also:

  • Work collaboratively as part of the Accreditation Team with the Operations Project Manager and alongside the Live Events Team
  • Welcome artists and production staff on-site at the Royal Albert Hall
  • Request information from artists and production staff; chase missing/incorrect information; print/issue security passes; troubleshoot; update required records and databases etc.
  • Other Event Admin tasks surrounding the festival

Are you the right candidate?

We're looking for people to be part of a pool of Freelance Accreditation Team members to work with our teams supporting the delivery of the BBC Proms from July to September.

We would love to hear from you if you have experience in some/all of the following and can demonstrate:

  • Enthusiasm and an interest in music and live events.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team and be friendly, professional, courteous and personable.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of people.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills with high attention to detail.
  • A positive proactive mindset with good problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively and turn challenging situations into practical solutions.
  • The ability to work under pressure managing multiple deadlines.
  • Previous accreditation experience would be advantageous.
  • Good IT skills with the ability to adapt quickly to a variety of software packages.

Appointment to the Talent Pool does not guarantee work and it will not entitle candidates to a permanent contract in the BBC; those will have to be applied for in the normal way. However, it may lead to consideration for broader freelance opportunities across the BBC Proms.

We will provide any additional training as required to enable you to work effectively in our teams and to widen your knowledge of our systems. This could include production specific programmes, e.g. Smartsheets.

We want BBC Proms' output to reflect and understand the audiences we serve - e.g. the different geographical regions of the UK and the experience of people from underrepresented groups (e.g. people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, people with lived experience of disability, individuals within the LGBTQ+ community and those from lower socio-economic groups). We are therefore actively seeking individuals with skills or experience that can help contribute towards ensuring we maximise the diversity of our coverage and content.

You will generally be based at the Royal Albert Hall but there may be some days required at a London BBC venue e.g. London Broadcasting House or BBC Maida Vale Studios for training etc.

Any work offered with the BBC will be conditional upon you having the right to work in the UK.

Next Steps:

If you are shortlisted we will invite you for an informal chat where you can also ask questions.

We aim to make this process as inclusive and straight forward as possible and are here to support you with the application process.

We will be shortlisting throughout the process so you may receive an update on your application before the deadline but please be assured we will be reviewing all submitted applications.

About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.

We don't focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours here .

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
