The Principal Engineer [E&P] will discharge the role of Lead Discipline Engineer (E&P) as the functional lead for E&P across the TRU Enterprise encompassing the OLE, HV and LV disciplines.

The role will report to the Senior Programme Engineering Manager alongside Principal Engineers for other disciplines as part of the Chief Engineers team who provide support and technical leadership to delivery teams.

You will provide strategic direction and technical leadership on all E&P activities within the Transpennine Route Upgrade with the objective of making sure that all activities are carried out in a safe and cost-effective manner, consistent with client requirements, business standards and relevant legislation.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade incorporates extensive E&P (OLE, HV and LV) work and the successful candidate will need to have experience and expertise to lead across these disciplines, in particular with respect to electrification. Collaboration with our Network Rail Route and TRU delivery teams will be a key requirement, to deliver innovation, efficiency, to support resolution of key risk issues and realise opportunities.

Drugs & Alcohol test: All prospective candidates offered a conditional role will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced

Main Responsibilities
  • Act as the E&P functional and profession leader for the programme
  • Programme-wide lessons learnt, best practice, innovation sharing and efficiency
  • Own relationships with key stakeholders and delivery leads across the programme
  • Lead the technical input to the development of the standards, specifications, means of compliance (including applications for derogations and non-compliance).
  • Discipline technical briefing/cascade and impact assessment
  • Discipline competence management
  • Promote and support career development, professional development and professional registration across the function
  • Support accident and incident investigations and lead technical investigations within the programme.
  • Resourcing of delivery teams to reflect changing needs through the project life cycle and influencing the deployment of supply chain staff on a best for programme basis
  • Influencing strategy within the discipline in liaison with experts internally and externally including regulatory bodies.
  • Proactively research and respond to changes in the internal and external requirements and practice.
  • Identify opportunities for technical and business process improvement and innovation, developing business cases and Investment Papers where required.
  • Represent TRU externally to the industry as required, speaking on and publishing in relevant platforms.
  • Support the development and implementation of competency frameworks and specify the engineering discipline training needs.
The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be an engineer with experience of leading electrification on a major programme, strengths in team working, stakeholder management, communication and collaboration, an ability to work across organisations and to build teams. They will have strong industry links with insight in to industry challenges and future opportunities. They will be able to maintain a long term strategic view whilst being capable of responding to emerging shorter term priorities. They will need to work independently but also understand when to share information and consult.

We need you to have:

  • Chartered Engineer or demonstrate equivalent experience (Level 7)
  • A sound knowledge of applicable policies, standards and national legislation
  • Experience of developing technology and product strategies
  • Knowledge of the safety management and risk assessment process

It would be advantageous if you have:

  • Strong background in electrification design and/or delivery
  • Strong commercial awareness and financially astute
  • Broad and extensive experience in the development of engineering technology
  • Experience of working in railway infrastructure management or a similar safety critical environment

Transpennine Route Upgrade

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a Programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.

Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 29 level crossings.

Proposed improvements as will deliver a hard-working, reliable railway for passengers, allowing for trains with more seats, more services and faster journey times.
