London, United Kingdom London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust Full time

SPECIALIST REGISTRARS

Inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology

We have 4 specialist registrars based on the inpatient gastroenterology wards at Northwick Park Hospital, based on Frederick Salmon South ward, and Central Middlesex Hospital, based on ward G4.

Intestinal Rehabilitation Unit

We have one specialist registrar and one clinical fellow based on this ward.

IBD Unit

We have one specialist registrar, usually a Deanery trainee, rotating through the year.

Physiology

We have one specialist registrar, usually a Deanery trainee, rotating through the year.

St Marks Surgery

We have a resident Surgical Officer (RSO) contactable via switchboard, or mobile number available on the rota which should be sent out monthly. The RSO reviews all IBD patients for St Marks related operations.

Fellows: There are multiple fellows who work on the wards/endoscopy/research units.

Acute Medicine: Our registrars will rotate through acute medicine.

The post will involve delivering clinical services across the London North West Healthcare NHS Trust and sessions may be worked on any of the Trust’s hospital sites, i.e., Northwick Park Hospital, St Mark’s Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital.

The appointee will be part of the acute gastroenterology service and will join the other Deanery appointed and three other Trust appointed registrars, working in the service. The registrars are supported by a team of 4 SHOs and 3 FY1 doctors.

The post holder will be allocated an educational supervisor and research opportunities are available and actively encouraged. The Trust does have a strong track record of LED post holders going on to obtain a training number. Flexibility will be required to meet the needs of the service but, depending on the interests and skills of the successful candidate, appropriate specialist training can be provided in hepatology, nutrition, endoscopy, etc.

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust is one of the largest integrated care Trusts in the country bringing together hospital and community services across the boroughs of Brent, Harrow, and Ealing. Our 9,000 staff, including 1,300 doctors and 4,000 nurses serve a diverse population of approximately 850,000. The Trust was established in October 2014 following the merger of The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust and Ealing Hospital NHS Trust and has an annual budget of over £640 million.

This is a pivotal time for the Trust as we pursue a transformational programme of activity to improve the way healthcare is delivered across the acute and community settings in North West London. To evolve as an organisation, we must create an identity and culture that will support the ambitions we have for our services 'to provide excellent clinical care in the right setting by being compassionate, responsive, and innovative.'

During this exciting period of opportunity and change, we have a clear plan to address our challenges and with the commitment of our teams we are making significant progress.

Duties will include:

  1. Responsibility for in-patient ward rounds leading ward rounds (with consultant supervision).
  2. Supporting the two Deanery registrars allocated to Northwick Park ward duties.
  3. Seeing ward specialist gastroenterology referrals and holding the referral bleep.
  4. Out-patient clinics (with consultant supervision).
  5. Endoscopy lists are allocated as possible, and we aim to provide one list per week.
  6. A training program will be organised to ensure that the appointee’s own continuing medical education needs are met, including engagement with the NHS Eportfolio.
  7. Ensure appropriate professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
  8. Expected to participate in the activities of the Department involving audit, clinical governance, and teaching.
  9. Expected to work alongside colleagues and managers throughout the Directorate and the Trust to provide an efficient Gastroenterology service.
  10. Will be expected to liaise with GPs and other professional groups who use the Gastroenterology service.
