As the School’s Student Experience Manager in the undergraduate office team, you will work with the Chief Advisers, Programme/Phase/Course Leaders and professional services and academic stakeholders to support the success, wellbeing and retention of a diverse range of students on the School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine’s undergraduate programmes. You will play the leading professional services role in the development, implementation and delivery of the School’s strategies, policies, and objectives in this area. Your focus will be the School’s veterinary programmes (the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery and the MSci/BSc (Hons)/BSc Veterinary Biosciences), ensuring targets and service levels are met.
As part of the Undergraduate school office, you will work in partnership with the student recruitment, marketing and admissions team and the programme and course delivery team.
You may also be asked to contribute to similar activities managed by the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences for the School’s life sciences programmes (currently the MSci/BSc (Hons)/BSc Marine and Freshwater Biology and the MSci/BSc (Hons)/BSc Zoology).
Core Management Responsibilities
Lead, in partnership the Chief Advisers and other stakeholders, the development, implementation and successful delivery of the School’s veterinary undergraduate Student Experience strategies, policies and objectives, meeting relevant professional body accreditation requirements and contributing to the achievement of College and University goals and targets.
Lead and manage the team responsible for the veterinary undergraduate student experience, by actively supporting their performance, development and welfare and by modelling a commitment to own professional and personal development.
Ensure that the University Values and equality, diversity and inclusion principles underpin all activities in the sphere of responsibility of the role and in interactions with others.
Manage the School budget for undergraduate student experience activities.
Lead the refinement of existing procedures and processes to ensure they are effective and efficient and appropriate to evolving requirements, developing new arrangements informed by good practice when necessary and ensuring that all standard operating procedures are documented and up to date and that records are managed in accordance with legislation and policies relating to the control of personal and confidential data.
Monitor key KPIs and targets to inform decision making and achievement of targets, developing new metrics, informed by appropriate data and information, where necessary/desirable.
Monitor legislation, accreditation requirements and key trends within sphere of responsibility, adapting practice in line with regulatory requirements and appropriate benchmarking.
Manage, in collaboration with academic colleagues and in liaison with central University services, transition and induction for new students at the beginning of each academic session, refining the programme in response to feedback from students and best practice.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with class representatives and office bearers of student organisations, supporting and facilitating participation in the Student Voice, the National Student Survey and other communication and feedback channels.
Manage the Student Adviser scheme, allocating advisers to new students and advising the Chief Advisers of Studies of academic and/or pastoral matters requiring intervention.
Oversee the coordination and development of the School’s extensive Extra-Mural Studies (EMS) placement programme for the BVMS (required by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), ensuring students are supported to meet their targets and that appropriate insurance and health and safety arrangements are in place for all placements.
Oversee the coordination of the BVMS and BSc Summer Vacation Scholarships scheme (research projects), ensuring appropriate advice is given to the academic co-ordinator and that the associated budget and external funds are fairly and timeously disbursed to students.
Manage the Good Cause and Fitness to Study procedures and student support more generally, to ensure that students experiencing difficult circumstances have the advice and support they need (including from specialist sources where appropriate) and are able continue on the programme. Coordinate the team’s contribution to the annual graduation and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Admissions ceremonies and prize-giving events.
Develop, in collaboration with School colleagues and central University services, a plan to engage with the School’s alumni to provide a long-lasting service for graduates and achieve their continued support for the School, maximise alumni affinity with the University and help promote the School/College/University’s developments and achievements to an external audience.
Manage student ambassador contributions to School student experience activities.
Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
