We are recruiting exceptional social research professionals to join the Centre for Children and Families at The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen).

NatCen has a long track record of conducting world class research on children and families. Our aim is to make an important contribution to public understanding of key contemporary issues including parenting, education and learning, and children's social and emotional wellbeing. NatCen's research influences policy makers, practitioners, academics and the media, shaping our understanding of the world we live in and how it is changing.

The team works with a wide range of customers and partners, including government departments, charities and foundations. Our methodological expertise is wide ranging, covering scoping and mapping studies, literature reviews, impact and process evaluations, qualitative studies, surveys and secondary data analysis.

We are seeking to appoint experienced research professionals, who are passionate about the issues faced by children and families in the UK, and who have a proven track record of designing and delivering high quality social research. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate:

  • Substantial experience of directing social research projects and programmes.
  • A track record of securing funding for high quality social research.
  • Strong methodological skills in one or more of the following: surveys, quantitative analysis, qualitative approaches or evaluation.
  • Experience of building and leading teams, and developing the skills of junior colleagues.
  • Commitment to building and maintaining good relationships with partners and customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct individual research studies including large scale projects to time and budget.
  • Manage project teams to deliver first-class research to meet client needs.
  • Provide advice, guidance and quality assurance for every aspect of the design, implementation, analysis and writing up of a study.
  • Lead on proposals and applications for funding.
  • Contribute to the development and mentoring of junior staff.
  • Engage in impact activities to promote NatCen's work externally.
  • Contribute to teaching research methods internally and/or externally.
  • Maintain and promote high ethical and information security standards.

To perform any other reasonable duties that NatCen may require that are consistent with the broad nature of the job

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential:

  • Undergraduate degree.
  • Advanced skills in at least one research method.
  • Outstanding ability to communicate clearly, in different styles and for different audiences.
  • Ability to work flexibly and proactively on multiple concurrent research projects.
  • Excellent project management and team-working skills and the ability to manage project budgets.
  • Knowledge and expertise in policy relating to children, families or education in the UK.
  • Thorough understanding of the relationship between research, policy and practice.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate degree in social research.
