“For the betterment of society”

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is one of the foremost social science universities in the world. With 18 Nobel Prize winners and 37 past or present heads of state among its diverse community of alumni, LSE is a truly influential and international university at the forefront of global policy debate. An LSE education provides students with a research-led, disciplinary and interdisciplinary experience, encouraging learners to engage critically with their subjects and real-world challenges, thus equipping them professionally and personally for the work into which they will graduate.

We are now seeking an experienced leader to take up the role of Vice President and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Faculty Development) who is a member of the School Management Committee, LSE’s executive senior management board. The Vice President and Pro-Vice Chancellor will provide academic leadership to ensure the achievement of the School’s strategic goals in developing a world class faculty to lead on teaching and research excellence. The current post-holder is due to be in post until 31 August 2025 at which point the successful candidate will take over full responsibilities. This is a key role and to ensure stability and consistency of the operation a period of learning, shadowing and orientation into the role will assist the new incumbent.

Candidates must have a track record in providing leadership and the ability to command respect in the School community on issues relating to recruitment, review, promotion, retention and pay. They must also be able to command respect of the School community on issues relating to equity, diversity and inclusion, freedom of speech, academic freedom and the School’s Ethics Code. They must be an established Professor with a PhD in a social science discipline and have an outstanding international reputation in their academic field. Excellent written and oral communications skills are essential to the role, as well as the ability to offer creative solutions to the various challenges faced by the School.

The other criteria that will be used when shortlisting for this post can be found on the person specification, which is attached to this vacancy.

The role is for a five-year term. Depending on the successful candidate’s academic profile, it is possible that they may hold a Professorial title in the School and become a member of the faculty in one of LSE’s Departments on completion of this role. The role can also be carried out on 0.8 FTE basis, allowing for the successful candidate to continue to pursue their academic research interests for the remaining 0.2 FTE (one day a week).

In addition to a competitive salary the benefits that come with this job include an occupational pension scheme, research leave (sabbatical) entitlement, a collegial faculty environment and excellent support, training and development opportunities.

Applications should consist of a CV accompanied by a brief covering letter addressing the criteria in the person specification and indicating why the post is of interest.
