Design Engineer

Oxford UK,

Reports to Head of Production

A composite tooling design role working with an enthusiastic team at a fast growing Composites Start Up based in Oxford, UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create optimised designs and technical drawings for composite patterns and moulds, in a range of materials
  • Manage customer data revisions
  • Work within time and budget limits, contribute to revising these if required
  • Manage external design resource, when required
  • Further developing specialist knowledge in composites tooling and manufacturing processes

Key Skills

  • Proficiency in CAD (Catia v5 and SolidWorks), including part design, surface design, assembly, and drafting modules
  • Best practice experience of parametric modelling, tooling and surface design optimised to a customer’s mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing requirements
  • Ability to create 2D technical drawings, adhering to good version control and that clearly convey design intent to manufacturing teams
  • Knowledge of composite manufacturing processes, including CNC machining and CFRP layup, and the ability to design tooling optimised for these, considering factors like material properties, tool paths, tolerances, and cost-effectiveness
  • Strong communication skills
  • Good commercial awareness
  • Excellent time management

Desirable Extras

  • Experience of Aerospace engineering standards
  • 2-5 years previous experience designing tooling for composites
