Job purpose :

We are currently recruiting for a Technical Designer to join our Façade Access Team in Chelmsford. As a Facade Access Technical Designer you will be focused on Project Delivery, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the design, engineering and implementation of facade access solutions for various façade access construction projects. You will collaborate closely with architects, engineers, project managers and clients to ensure the seamless integration of our access systems into building facades while meeting safety, functionality, and regulatory requirements.

The Façade Access division has over 75 years of experience in designing, manufacturing, and engineering building maintenance systems across the world.Some of our most notable and iconic projects include; the Shard (London, UK), the Burj Khalifa (Dubai, UAE), Battersea Power Station (London, UK), Sydney Harbour Bridge (Syndey, Australia), 22 Bishopsgate (London, UK) and Lloyds of London (London, UK).

This role is full-time role based at our office in Chelmsford, as part of our Project Management and engineering Team.

Key tasks :

Design Development:

  • Utilize CAD, Revit and Solid Works software and other design tools to review and create detailed technical drawings and specifications for facade access systems, considering project requirements and constraints.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and assessments to determine the most suitable access solutions based on building design, structure, and location.
  • Collaborate with architects and engineers to integrate access systems seamlessly into building facades, ensuring aesthetic and functional harmony.

Engineering support:

  • Provide technical expertise and support to the engineering team throughout the design and development process.
  • Review and analyse structural calculations, load capacities, and other engineering documentation to ensure the structural integrity and safety of access systems.
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturers to select appropriate components and materials for facade access equipment.

Technical:

  • Preparation of Material technical submittal, method statement, risk assessment, ITP, O&M manuals, training manual, etc as per the project requirement.
  • Using 2D and 3D software, produce fully complaint GA/As-built drawings for customer approval as per PM request.
  • BIM Compliance – produce all required BIM models for the project. Ensure clash detection is completed and all interfaces with other packages are reviewed with PMs. Produce all required metadata for the project.
  • Preparation of detailed drawings for manufacturing as per PMs request.
  • Attend client technical meetings with stake holders as per the requirement.
  • Responsible for supporting production process if required to interpret design needs.
  • Provide documentation on the requirements of use and operational safety requirements of finished product for inclusion in final operating procedures.
  • Accountable for clear handover to production for manufacture items.
  • Provide Technical documentation for issuing/closing NCRs and ECRs.
  • Work closely with the factory engineers to ensure the project meets the system and specification requirements.
  • Plan the project deliverables, maintain and monitor the plan and update as required to all stakeholders.

Regulatory:

  • Stay abreast of industry standards, codes, and regulations related to facade access and building safety.
  • Responsible for ensuring all design drawings and documents achieve required safety standards and guidelines of the local regulations (LOLER) and authorities.
  • Ensure that all design and engineering activities comply with relevant regulatory requirements and guidelines.

Customer:

  • Engage with clients to understand their specific access requirements and preferences.
  • Present design proposals, technical solutions, and project updates to clients in a clear and professional manner.
  • Address client feedback and incorporate revisions as necessary to ensure client satisfaction.

Project Management

  • Participate in project meetings to discuss design progress, timelines, and potential challenges.
  • Coordinate with project managers to develop project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation plans.
  • Address technical queries and provide solutions to onsite installation teams during the implementation phase.

Competencies & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Proven experience (5 years) in facade access design, engineering, or project delivery within the construction or building maintenance industry.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) and other relevant design tools.
  • Strong knowledge of structural analysis, load calculations, and building codes/regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and clients.
  • Project management experience, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage timelines, and allocate resources efficiently.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills, with a commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative solutions.
  • Familiarity with facade access equipment and systems (e.g., suspended platforms, building maintenance units) is advantageous.
