University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). The post will be based on a full time 10 PA permanent contract. This is a replacement post to manage a tertiary specialist neuro-ophthalmology service receiving referrals for afferent and efferent disease from across the region and more widely.
Ophthalmology is located at four hospital sites as part of UHB which are: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital Birmingham (HHB), Solihull Hospital (SH) and Good Hope Hospital (GHH). Neuro-ophthalmology is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
There are more than 30 substantive consultants who provide an outpatient and surgical service. The entire range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics are provided and there is a close communication with consultants in other specialities.
As well as consultant ophthalmologists the eye service is supported by ophthalmic specialist trainees, staff-grades, fellows, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and ophthalmic technicians. There is a programme of training for extended roles, with Clinical Nurse Specialists in a number of specialities.
Imaging facilities vary across the hospital sites depending on the service needs, however, it currently includes OCT, OCTA, Bluepeak AF, Multicolour, HRA-OCT for FFA/ICG, UWF Optos, Ultrasound, UBM, AS-OCT, Corneal topography and research access to FLEX mobile Spectralis and Anterion SS AS-OCT. In addition, UHBFT has a substantial neuro-radiology department with access to the full range of neuro-imaging facilities, inpatient neurology neurosurgery.
This is a post to support UHB Ophthalmology services in Neuro-ophthalmology and the successful applicant will be expected to establish a service to help meet the clinical requirements of the emergency workload from across the region. It is anticipated that the post holder will have post-CCT subspecialty training in Neuro-ophthalmology. Whilst the majority of sessions are likely to take place at QEHB, there may be a clinical need for sessions to also be at any of the other hospital sites also.
We are working towards a three session day so some of the timetabled fixed sessions may be evening sessions and/or weekend sessions.

University Hospitals Birmingham is a Smoke-Free premises hospital.
We are also increasing our provision of community ophthalmology and thus clinics may include review of remotely acquired investigations. Flexible/annualised sessions may be included for some theatre sessions to support the department maximising theatre capacity for our patients.
It is expected that the clinical team participate in supporting the review of ward referrals in clinic.
The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.
It will also involve attention to continuing professional development and to meeting requirements for continuing medical education as expected by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. It will also involve the awareness of professional standards and the responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice and the importance of responding promptly to any circumstances, which may result in increased clinical risk or adverse outcome.
Funding is available for approved study leave as defined in the Trust study leave policy.
The post will be offered in accordance with the NHS terms and conditions of service for the employment of Hospital Medical and Dental staff for England and Wales Annexe B EL (91) 150.
This full time job plan will contain 10 clinical sessions including sessions for administration directly related to patient care and 1 session for supporting professional activity although more can be allocated to staff who undertake additional duties if there is a departmental service need. The successful candidate will, on initial appointment and thereafter, be required to inform the Trust of any regular commitments in respect of private professional services or fee paying services. The post holder must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and is advised to maintain up to date membership of a recognised medical defence organisation
An applicant who is unable for personal or academic reasons to fulfil the full time requirements of this post will be eligible to be considered for the position; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed with the Trust on a personal basis in consultation with the Clinical Service Lead.
The successful candidate is expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and comply with the standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.
The unauthorised use or disclosure of patient or other personal information is a dismissible offence and in the case of computerised information, could result in a prosecution for an offence or action for civil damages under the Data Protection Act 1998.
The appointment is subject to pre-employment health screening.
On the Specialist Register or within 6 months of completion of training.
