Rosyth Fife, United Kingdom Optos Full time

About us

When a five-year-old boy was blinded after a regular eye exam failed to spot a retinal detachment, his father made it his life’s work to help eye care professionals by revolutionising retinal imaging. Optos was founded by Douglas Anderson in 1992 with the goal to make a patient-friendly device to quickly capture the entire retina.

The experience of Douglas Anderson is a thread that runs through the company to this day and has resulted in our products being used in nearly 20,000 locations globally. Optomap® shows up to 82% (200°) of the retina in a single-capture, offering unrivalled clarity and Optos is proud to be recognised as the leader in this field.

To stay at the forefront of technology and offer the very best solutions to our customers, we are at the beginning of an exciting journey that will expand our product offering, cement our position as the leaders in this field and see us expand our already fantastic team.

Over the last 12 months we have made great progress in developing a new generation of products that will use cutting-edge technologies to drive our mission to transform eye care and are now looking for a Senior Hardware Engineer to continue the momentum, bringing your experience and ideas with you.

You and the role

We would love it if you came from a medical devices, automotive or defence/aerospace background as these industries translate well to what we do and how we work.

As part of our highly motivated team of engineers, you will drive innovation in the design and development of the electronics and systems that are fundamental elements of our products.

You will be responsible for designing innovative analogue/digital electronic solutions for new retinal imaging products, adhering to the design control process.

You will also be regularly assessing how to improve electronic performance and reliability in our existing product range. This will be achieved through collaboration with the wider team, design analysis and innovative technology solutions.

The role includes but is not limited to developing and executing test methods for hardware components, modules and systems, FMEA and providing customer support in the form of creative solutions to problems encountered with the product.

You will have a direct impact on our product and technology roadmap with regards to emerging technologies for performance improvements and cost reduction. You will also be happy working to tight deadlines and be able to manage your own time well.

While this role does not have direct line management responsibilities, you will be acting as a role model providing technical leadership and guidance to the team as we drive growth through class-leading ophthalmic products and services. This would suit someone who may want to grow with us long-term and is confident leading by example.

Typical duties will include peer reviewing electronics designs of other Optos electronics engineers and communicating design intent and operational workflow of designed electronic systems to product engineering staff.

It would also be great if you have experience of working with ISO13485 and FDA Medical Device Design Control processes.

From an educational perspective, you will be degree qualified in electronic engineering or a related field.

Life at Optos is fast-paced and everyone tends to chip in. We have an experienced team who are comfortable working across various disciplines and teams so you’ll be a good fit for us if you don’t want to ‘stay in your lane’

What we offer

Optos offers competitive basic salaries along with bonus and a host of benefits including enhanced holidays, flexible working, hybrid working and contributory pension. We have a range of extras that all go towards making our colleagues feel valued, respected and well looked after.

In summary we are looking for…

  • Hardware Engineer from medical devices, automotive or defence/aerospace
  • Degree in electronic engineering, or a related field
  • Comfortable delivering cross functional design solutions outside of your expertise (e.g. optical, mechanical, software, firmware)
  • Competence in analogue/digital electronics design and analysis using modelling (Cadence and Xilinx) and experimental/prototyping methods
  • Experience in DFx (design for manufacturing, assembly and test)
  • Knowledge and appreciation of ISO13485 and FDA Medical Device Design Control
  • Mentoring/ leadership experience or strong potential/ natural next step

What next?

We believe the key to unlocking our potential is to recruit driven, innovative, and collaborative people. These are people who embrace challenges, diversity and change and who are looking for unlimited opportunities – people who believe that the most exciting thing about Optos is what we are going to do next.

You can apply for this role directly via our website or contact our recruitment partner India Smith (ismith@optos.com) for an informal discussion.
