Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Technical

  • To competently perform, analyse and report ambulatory ECG including event recorders, resting and ambulatory BP recordings
  • To supervise exercise tolerance testing, Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) and Head-Up Tilt Testing (HUTT) and report the diagnostic findings upon completion of local standards
  • To competently document haemodynamic monitoring and procedural records during diagnostic, interventional (PCI, IVUS, OCT, shockwave, rotablation, IABP, Impella) and structural (TAVI, Mitraclip, LAAO, PFO closure) cardiac catheterisation procedures.
  • To participate in the primary angioplasty on-call service and/or emergency arrhythmia pathway
  • To competently provide physiologist support during loop recorder implantation and explants
  • To competently provide physiologist support during pacemaker implantation, generator replacement and associated procedures
  • To be competent in the follow up of Bradycardia and ILR in clinic and by remote monitoring
  • To programme and optimise therapeutic devices including ICD and CRT devices and to report / document accurately on EPR and clinical databases
  • To participate in research activities of the department as required

2. Service Quality and Efficiency

  • To demonstrate an awareness of the needs and priorities of co-workers, other departments and of the role of the Cardiac Department within both the Cardiac Care Group and Trust as a whole; coordinating and cooperating with colleagues and applying a flexible, collaborative, team building approach
  • To attend and actively participate in departmental meetings and in conjunction with senior colleagues to contribute a proactive approach to issues relating to quality of care, clinical physiologist standards and efficiency improvements, as applied to own area of work and that of junior colleagues
  • In conjunction with the Principal Physiologists, to participate in stock control, ordering, monitoring of expenditure, ensuring efficient usage of consumables and liaise with company representatives as required
  • To manage and prioritise own workload, demonstrating time management skills; undertaking work in a timely and efficient way, meeting deadlines and organising own workload in conjunction with other members of the team, delegating where necessary
  • To maintain clinical documentation and databases and to participate in the provision of data for statistical analysis, applying and promoting high standards of record keeping with respect to accuracy, timeliness of completion and confidentiality
  • To exercise initiative and judgement in solving problems and making decisions that affect own area of technical work and that of junior colleagues, whilst keeping others informed and recognising when there is a need to refer problems to senior colleagues
  • To review and prioritise inpatient requests for cardiac investigations including but not limited to; ambulatory ECG recording, exercise tolerance tests and head up tilt table tests, liaising with ward staff and ensuring availability of cardiac physiology staff and resources in conjunction with a multi-disciplinary team

3. Educational and Supervisory

  • To complete the Band 6 Staff Development Programme as necessary
    To provide technical and clinical advice as necessary to peers, juniors and students, whilst demonstrating an awareness of when issues should be escalated
  • To supervise and mentor junior colleagues, PTP and STP students encouraging high standards of performance
  • To assist in education throughout the Trust, including medical students, PTP and STP trainees
  • To identify and attend relevant conferences and courses to maintain continuous professional development
  • To maintain own proficiency by keeping up to date with current guidelines
  • To ensure that own mandatory training certificates are current
  • To participate in his/her own Performance Review and actively participate in own professional development
  • To maintain current clinical accreditation and support will be provided for the post holder to work towards additional accreditation as appropriate
  • The post holder will be encouraged to apply and work towards STP equivalence and maintain memberships with professional bodies
  • To write up interesting case studies / clinical abstracts and submit to appropriate journals

4. Professional

  • The post holder has a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act of 1974 and all other relevant legislation in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
  • The post holder will carry out their duties with due regard to the Trust's Human Resources Policy, Standing Financial Instructions and other relevant Policies of the Trust
  • To observe the rules, policies and procedures of King's College Hospital NHS Trust
  • To maintain satisfactory personal performance and quality standards and to achieve where possible objectives agreed in the Annual Staff Appraisal system.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Either one of the following qualifications • BSc in Cardiac Physiology or equivalent or • BSc in Healthcare Science (PTP) - Clinical Cardiac Physiology or • MSc in Healthcare Science (STP) - Clinical Cardiac Physiology
  • Immediate Life Support (ILS)

Desirable criteria

  • Post graduate qualifications such as MSc. Cardiology, BSE or BHRS/ IBHRE, POETTS

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Experience of performing and reporting physiologist led exercise tests
  • High level of knowledge of cardiac pathologies, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes and causes of syncope

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of performing and reporting Heads up Tilt tests
  • Competent in CRM (pacemakers, ICD and CRT) device follow up
  • Ability to demonstrate experience, skills and knowledge in complex interventional and structural procedures
  • Competent in CRM (pacemakers, ICD and CRT) device implants

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to utilise research in clinical practice, applying an evidence based practice approach
  • Good organisational and time management
