Scientific Equipment Care (SEC) Service Engineer

Reports to: Scientific Equipment Care (SEC) Manager

This is a full-time/permanent position on Crick Terms and Conditions of Employment. 

SUMMARY

Researchers at the Crick are operating over 15,000 pieces of scientific equipment. It is vital that equipment is well maintained and returned to service quickly following breakdown. The Scientific Equipment Care Service provides high quality, responsive, and cost effective, in-house service to maintain and repair scientific equipment, minimising disruption to scientific operations in the event of equipment failure.

The Scientific Equipment Care Service Engineer reports to the SEC Manager. SEC Service Engineers are multi-skilled and able to maintain and repair a diverse portfolio of scientific assets, within the laboratory and specialist science technology platforms. You will poses a high level of skills, knowledge and experience in electronic, electrical, mechanical, process control, fluids, pneumatics, refrigeration and hydraulics engineering fields. Being able to diagnose / fault find complex scientific apparatus and effect a repair. Working with end users to plan routine and reactive service visits identifying and advising users on lifecycle issues and economy of repair/replacement of scientific equipment/instruments. Support the development of prototype instruments and systems with science users.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Your duties will include:

  • Planning and conducting planned maintenance activities on Scientific equipment/instruments

  • Planning and conducting reactive maintenance tasks on scientific equipment / instruments

  • Maintain quality performance standards of systems through routine test and calibration

  • Managing the work of external service engineers

  • Advising and maintaining on critical spares inventory

  • Identifying, sourcing and procuring replacement parts for reactive tasks

  • Identifying specialist skills training for new technologies relevant to role

  • Ensuring all work is carried out in a safe manner and equipment worked on/with complies with statutory regulation such as COSHH, PUWER and IET electrical safety standards

  • Comply with Crick SHS processes and procedures

  • Maintain equipment / instrument maintenance history via the CAFM(Planon) system

  • Maintain progress updates and routine planning interfaces with end users

  • Support the development/maintenance of operating procedures and risk assessments/method statements

  • Provide an equipment / instrument development service to develop new novel / unique devices for science

This role involves significant levels of communication with scientific research and operational staff, as well as STPs and the Hard FM provider.

KEY EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, open, and collegial, in addition to the following:

Essential:

  • ONC or City Guilds FTC in electrical / electronic engineering or relevant engineering discipline

  • Significant experience in equipment service engineering or related field

  • Demonstrable experience of electronic electrical and fault-finding and repair of a wide range of devices, down to component level

  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Ability to read and interpret circuit diagrams and schematics

  • Knowledgeable of relevant requirements, such as IET Electrical Equipment CoP, PUWER Risk assessment and COSHH

  • Ability to communicate well in order to explain technical issues to non-technical personnel

  • Engage in continuous improvement of service delivery

  • Working to Risk Assessments Method Statement and OEM instructions

  • Self-Starter with a desire to continuously improve and develop their skills and knowledge

  • Positive attitude and work ethic

  • Attention to detail

  • This role requires some moderate manual handling

Desirable:

  • Experience of working on scientific equipment

  • Experience of working with high containment and/or animal facilities

  • Experience of preparing SOPs, risk assessments and method statements

  • Experience and a qualification in Inspection and Testing of Electrical equipment (Portable Appliance Testing)

  • qualifications and experience working with mechanical and refrigerant systems
