Key Information

Job title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Hours: 37.5 per week

Location: Furman House, Shap Road, Kendal, LA9 6RU

About the role

The principle responsibilities of this role include:

  • Produce timely, safe, effective and economic design solutions for both relatively routine problems and those, for which we have no previous experience to rely on.
  • Assist Design Engineers and Juniors in delivering engineered solutions. Act as a technical and cultural mentor to less senior staff
  • Represent Engineering at commercial / project meetings
  • Actively work to achieve multi-skilling across the full suite of TEAM’s products and services
  • To use professional engineering judgement to ensure TEAM’s products and services are safe, effective, competitive and meet all engineering related regulatory and legislative requirements.
  • To undertake stress calculations, material selection and other related matters.
  • Produce detailed manufacturing drawings to implement design solutions to all relevant engineering and quality standards.
  • Liaise with manufacturing during production, ensuring any required modifications are technically acceptable and properly controlled within the quality system.
  • Visit customer sites (including offshore and overseas) to carryout surveys, attend progress meetings etc.
  • Maintain drawings and other engineering documents in accordance with departmental procedures and quality standards.
  • Participation in the weekly on-call rota
  • Actively promote and follow the Core Values within all work-based activities.
  • Comply with company procedures and Engineering policies including, but not restricted to, security and intellectual property.

Skills and Knowledge required:

  • In depth knowledge of current BSEN drawing standards.
  • In depth knowledge of current regulations that are applicable to machinery and mechanical equipment, i.e section 6 of the HSW act, the Machinery Directive, PUWER, LOLER, etc.
  • In depth knowledge of current versions of BSEN standards relating to Engineering Materials, Limits and Fits, Screw Threads, Gears and the Design of Cranes (lifting equipment)
  • Experience of good design practice, e.g. Geometric Tolerancing, selecting Limits and Fits, designing for Fabrication, designing for Manufacture and designing for Assembly.
  • Extensive experience at technical report writing
  • Mechanical Engineering and Mathematical skills. BEng or BSc + relevant professional engineering experience
  • Very high level of competence with SolidWorks, ANSYS and Mathcad Prime
  • A working knowledge of workshop fitting and assembly processes
  • A working knowledge of machining and related manufacturing processes.

Working Conditions:

  • Office based.
  • Some travel, site visits both offshore and overseas may be required.
  • Some participation in workshop-based testing and troubleshooting is required.
