An opportunity exists for a Graduate to join an entrepreneurial Insurance underwriting business that has aggressive growth plans over the next 3 years.

As a Graduate, there will be the opportunity to learn about different areas of the Insurance business and how it interacts with IT, improve your communication skills and enhance your analysis capabilities as you meet and engage with stakeholders across a range of Insurance departments.

The day to day:

The Company utilises as its core Underwriting platform a software product that is highly configurable to meet the underwriters needs and as such we are looking for a candidate with strong analysis and good communication skills who can deliver requirements to the business, whether it be new products or changes to existing products and become a product expert over time, by configuring the system. This is part IT development (coding), part configuration (tick boxes, document formatting, building logic etc) and Analysis and documentation of change.

You will need to demonstrate a willingness to take the initiative and ensure that you deliver good quality work within a defined time frame, sometimes working outside normal hours to meet demand.

You will be working in a team of 20+, ranging from specialist IT teammates who have years of Insurance and IT knowledge to Graduates who joined the business 12 months ago. There is a structured career path for the first 5 years of your employment and this can be explained at interview.

About you:

  • University degree 2.1 or higher with a strong interest in a varied IT career
  • Be willing to learn – the complexities of the Insurance business along with the technical challenges of learning a new system will mean a long period of ongoing knowledge transfer.
  • Understand your limits - ask for help when you need it and take the lead when you can.
  • Have excellent communication skills - must be able to communicate across all levels from Managing Director down and be able to articulate technical issues in an easy to understand manner.
  • An Analytical mindset – the majority of work will require planning and agreement with stakeholders before development and/or configuration can begin.
  • Attention to detail – you will be configuring items such as policy documents, producing ratings algorithms for premiums.
  • Flexibility is key. We are a small team who all roll our sleeves up where necessary and at times work additional hours to get the job complete. The first 12 months of your role will be based in the London office whilst you train. After that flexible working is provided with a minimum of 3 days in the office.
  • Any experience of SQL or Programming would be beneficial. Good Microsoft Excel skills would also be beneficial to the role.
  • Be prepared to continue your education by embarking on a series on Insurance exams provided by the Charted Institute for Insurance (CII).
