Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Powertrain) - EV/Motorsport - £60k to £70k - Northamptonshire

One my key clients is currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Powertrain) to join their dynamic team. My client is a technical consultancy that specialise in the EV & Motorsport sector, helping major OEMS solve their technical problems.

Role: Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Powertrain)

Salary: £65k to £70k

Location: Northamptonshire

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of powertrain components and systems, including engines, transmissions, and driveline systems, from concept to production.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of mechanical design engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Conduct detailed engineering analyses, utilizing advanced CAD software and simulation tools to create robust and efficient designs.
  • Oversee the integration of powertrain systems with other vehicle systems, coordinating with cross-functional teams including electrical engineering, software development, and manufacturing.
  • Perform design reviews, feasibility studies, and risk assessments to ensure the technical integrity and viability of projects.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements, ensuring our powertrain solutions are competitive and compliant.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance design processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Manage complex projects, balancing technical requirements, timelines, budgets, and resources to achieve project goals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and developing powertrain components, including internal combustion engines, electric drivetrains, transmissions, and hybrid systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX) and engineering simulation tools (e.g., FEA, CFD).
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex engineering challenges.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of automotive industry standards and regulations.
