About the Role


The Chief of Staff is the principal adviser to the Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, (herein after referred to as CSTO) and leads a small private office that supports them in their role.

The opportunity offers an exciting career move into a fast-paced portfolio.

The role will be varied and interesting and will involve strategic coordination both internally and externally across key areas.

They will help the CSTO to transform the organisation through driving and delivering its strategy and will help to shape the business areas that report to the CSTO and influence how the business group works to deliver for the CSTO and the people of London.


As Chief of Staff they will be the key adviser to the leadership of the Met and the teams who are delivering the strategy for how the Met is changing and reforming through its portfolio of transformation programmes of over £300million.

They will oversee the running of the office of the CSTO and will help to deliver the New Met for London plan across the Met.

The CSTO is responsible for overseeing the full breadth of the Met's strategy and transformation work
- the Chief of Staff will be helping the CSTO to make the decisions needed. They will act as an adviser to the CSTO based on a higher level of oversight across each function to ensure the enabling functions are allocated in the most effective way to deliver value.


They will act on behalf of the CSTO to deal with issues using judgement and experience to resolve day to day problems.

As the CSTO is at Management Board level these issues will impact at organisational level. They will use political acumen and attention to detail to identify risks and when issues need to be escalated.

They will create strong relationships across the senior leadership team and beyond to help identify and mitigate issues and work effectively with corporate structures and teams to achieve timely information feeds.


They will be the key interlocutor between the 100s of officers and staff that work on Strategy and Transformation Group and the Chief Officer, and help to ensure their priorities are delivered.

They will also work closely and develop close relationships with senior staff in the offices of the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Met management board members.


To succeed, you will be a motivated self-starter, with experience of working in a delivery or strategic environment and will be comfortable working at pace in a large organisation.

You will be equipped with the interpersonal skills needed to build positive relationships, and influence, negotiate and challenge successfully across a range of internal and external stakeholders and partners.

Experience of working in or closely with a Private/Staff Office environment is beneficial.


The CSTO is new in post, and the Directorate is young and newly established in the Met, there is significant scope to make this role your own, and you will be key to helping the CSTO shape how they will deliver their priorities.
